Wisdom tooth removal under a G.A - any experiences?

Smurfgirl · 01/03/2007 21:06

I saw a oral surgeon today who booked me in to remove all (4) of my impacted embedded widsom teeth. He said I will need it done under a G.A - which I am pretty pleased about would not like to be awake.

Has anyone had any experience of this? What was it like? Is the pain really awful.

I am having it done at a nice hospital so maybe that will make it better!! I am 22 which he said made things easier.

Thanks

i had it done about that age [peers dimly into ancient history] it was ok. but face really really sore where they must have clamped or whatever horrors they do. the wounds weren't too bad after a day or so, mouths heal so quickly. i had to stay at home for about a week, but only in hosp overnight. i cannot lie to you, it isn't very nice, but agonising pain not really the main prob.

i had mine out at 15, they're leaving it much later now aren't they. you'll be okay, lots of salt water gargles

divamumplus · 01/03/2007 21:23

yepp, i had 2 removed as there was no room. mine was quite operation, one of the dentist refused to do as he thought it was dangeruos ( in my case) it was 2 years ago, and im glad i have them done. it wasnt that bad as i expected it would be. surprisingly it heals so fast, go and get it done. did you have pains due ti wisdom teeth? then one pain and no more good lcuk

bubblicious · 01/03/2007 21:26

I had this done, I was lucky although my face felt bruised I didnt get any bruising, the lady opposite (poor thing) her face was covered in bruises! I must admit I would have them taken out again if I had any!

admylin · 01/03/2007 21:26

I had 2 of mine taken out years ago by my dentist in Germany. I had injections and then she pulled one that was easy to get at and had to cut the other into pieces inside my gum, then stiched and sent me home. I was off work for a few days and took pain killers and antibiotics. The other 2 are still in there, too scared to go through it all again so would say with G A is a good idea to get it over with all 4 at once. I know in France where I lived before, all my friends had it done with G A too.

I had it done at around the same age. My only advice is just don't expect to be OK again after 3 days. If you're lucky you will be, but I was still poorly after 2 weeks.

Sorry to give you bad news, but I wished someone had warned me - I had swanky health insurance with my company at the time so had the op done in Harley street and had complete freedom about when to book the op. I booked it for a week before Easter, when I figured I'd be completely recovered. I really really wasn't, and if I'd known, I would have booked it for a different time.

Apparantly that's quite rare though, so don't think you will be ill for 2 weeks. But if you have a choice, book it when it's not as inconvenient to be out of action for a fortnight.

i had mine removed, 2 with the dentist , who really wanted to be a surgeon and struggled for 3 hrs, i was in absolute agony after for weeks, then the others under ga, wasnt very well, but better than the local, dh had his done under ga and was eating steak and chips 5 hrs later - i had stocked up on fat shakes, build up drinks etc - we were newly married and i was more sympathetic in those days

Marie12 · 01/03/2007 21:32

I had 3 out last Oct. I had them out under GA in the morning and back home by the afternoon so from that point of view its good 'cos you are in and out and you aren't aware of any of it.

I won't lie to you though, rhe recovery isn't a nice experience, but if you are suffering with your wisdom teeth at the mo, then it will be a relief in the long run.

Just be prepared for swelling afterwards and maybe bruising. Get ice packs for the first day or so and then a heat pack for after that. I found holding this against my face really comforting. Get plenty of soup, porridge and yogurts in, nice drinks like different flavoured squash, and plenty of painkillers. The hospital should give you antibiotis and some painkillers but ibuprofen and paracetamol combination is good, or codeine.

I don't want to scare you but you might as well know what to expect becasue no-one was honest with me about how it would be and it knocked me sideways. I really thought there was something wrong with me becasue it took me much longer to recover than they said, but when I rang the hospital they said it was normal for recovery to be longer when having 3 teeth out at once. I was off sick from work for 2 weeks, not one.

It was the best thing I ever did! You know that feeling when you really, REALLY need to sleep, but the kids want you to be awake and you just haven't got the energy, but you push on thru? Well, you feel like that when you wake up from GA and the best bit is - you CAN go back to sleep - for hours if you like!

But seriously, I don't remember having any pain afterwards and I was back on solids within 24 hours. It will be fine - good luck!

Piffle · 01/03/2007 21:36

I had 3 out under GA when I was 20
Afterwards pain not great for 2-3 days, when it wears off after surgery is the worst bit -take painkillers, then eat soft stuff. Ask for the best painkillers, paracetamol is not enough in the first 48 hrs
I had to take 5 days off work, the bruising was dreadful.

Smurfgirl · 01/03/2007 21:36

I am having them out at the beginning of my 3 week easter holidays so will have 3 weeks to recover. That should be ok?

I was told it would take about 10 days to start to feel normal again?

I had mine out under GA about the same age as you. It was over 20 years ago now, but I still remember feeling really groggy for several days. It would have been hard to look after small children after it as I seem to remember being bed-bound for a couple of days! I suppose it is what you are used to though as I was looking after a newborn and 2 small boys, 9 days after an emergency section. I suppose you just cope with what you have to.

fishie · 01/03/2007 21:42

yes that sounds about right. oh dear i've just remembered i had to sleep sitting up for a couple of nights because it hurt too much to be near a pillow. i was a right wimp at that age though and awfully lazy too so perhaps i was overreacting.

sandcastles · 01/03/2007 21:42

I had all 4 removed under GA & had little or no recovery problems. I had them done at Bupa, tho.

A patient from the practice I worked at had 4 out, GA NHS & he suffered. Bruising, swelling, pain etc.

You will be given post op intrusctions & should be given painkillers & mouthwash. If you use as directed it will help healing.

If you smoke, avoid it for as long as possible.

I was off work for a week, not because of the treatment, juts because I couldn't eat & was quite weak.

Smurfgirl · 01/03/2007 21:42

I don't have children so thats not an issue BTW.

Thanks for the advice, I am very nervous about the pain, I have never really had any bad pain I think hmm. I will be glad to have them out because I have lots of infections and constant pain so it will be worth it. Still scary though.

Yes, I had it done when I was around your age, therefore 15 ago . I did it in Italy though. No pain whatsoever, after waking up, I just looked like a beaver for the first 2 or 3 days and had to eat yoghurts etc.

Smurfgirl · 01/03/2007 21:43

Oh and I am having it done at a private hospital - shouldn't make a difference should it?

OP posts:
fishie · 01/03/2007 21:46

welll they might be nicer to you! i had mine done at eastman dental hosp in london cos dental nerve wrapped round a toothy so normal hospital wouldn't touch. it was very errm dental. and they chucked me out at 8.30am and dp didn't collect me till 9.15 sob.

sandcastles · 01/03/2007 21:51

Fishie.....it was 'very dental' as it's one of London's biggest dental teaching hospitals, along with Guys.

Smurfgirl, you will more then likely have a better recovery being private. They tend to take their time & not have the conveyer belt type apointment system you find in NHS establishments.

fishie · 01/03/2007 21:54

i know sandcastles, but i was young and scared and they weren't very good at nursing (and it was dead grim there too) sure you are prob absolutely right on recovery time in private.

Caligula · 01/03/2007 21:59

There was a fantastic menu at the clinic i was at including wine and I was so pissed off that I felt too ill to have any of the food or wine!
