Terrified of having general anaethestic tomorrow

This is my first post! I'm having a GA tomorrow (cystoscopy), & I'm absolutely terrified, seriously considering cancelling & carrying on with pain & hassle of constant cystitis. I suppose I just want to hear it will be ok! Just the thought of being 'out of it', plus fear of something sinister being discovered. My DH is so kind & supportive, coming with me, but his kindness makes me feel worse!

In answer to post about why I'm having ga...I know! That's what I asked, but apparently there's 2 kinds, rigid or flexible & im having flexible so they can take biopsy? Apparently that but can be painful so they give ga

Thanks water, might go me some good to feed myself with a teaspoon for a few days! Grin

Piehunter · 19/02/2017 22:28

I'm having a flexible with potential biopsy and I still only get the crap "numbing" gel! Well now after reassuring you about your GA I'm nervous about my non GA cystoscopy Blush

PacificDogwod · 19/02/2017 22:30

AFAIK it's rigid cystoscopies that require GA? Disclaimer: not an expert.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 19/02/2017 22:31

I've had four.

Each time I've been scared, but the pre-med helps a lot. The gradual feel as the coldness moves through you lasts a couple of seconds, and the next thing you are coming round in the recovery room.

The thing I actually dislike the most is waking up with a mask on my face and the dimness of the recovery room.

It is actually a very calm procedure.

Piehunter · 19/02/2017 23:59

Ooh well my urologist is giving me confusing information! No biopsy with flexy. Bonus. Just like a wiggling catheter.. Joy Grin

maltesersarethedevil · 20/02/2017 06:16

Rozzle. It was fine to be honest. Had an awful sore throat as as other poster said could only open my mouth a little bit. I had a stash of slim fast shakes, not obvs to loose weight but to at least get some kind of nutrition.
3 out of 4 of mine were were impacted so I was bruised and bashed but it soon went.

So glad I had it done.

louisehamham · 20/02/2017 09:18

Actually it IS the rigid one I'm having, I'm at hospital now. They use that to pass the biopsy instruments through??? I asked anaethsetist if I could have a pre med to calm me & she said no, it would make me too sleepy when I needed to wake up??? Bit of a cow actually.

I was scared with my GA for gallery bladder op, it was fine, but the nurse tried to make me feel better by making conversation when I would have preferred to zone out

Lissette · 20/02/2017 09:25

Louise sending positive thoughts your way for today. I think it will go fine. X

sunnyhills · 20/02/2017 11:11

Teaching! Teenagers! Teenage boys! Shock

Now thatis scary .

Sorry anesathtist ( sorry Blush ) wasn't knd . Hope you're doing ok .

Piehunter · 20/02/2017 13:52

Pre meds are usually only given for longer ops I think as it gives the sedative time to get out of your system. Hope all has gone well, sorry the anaesthetist was a cow- it makes things so much worse than they need to be when bedside manner isn't as good as it could be!

Blastandtroph · 20/02/2017 17:30

How did it go Louise?

louisehamham · 21/02/2017 09:23

Hi thanks for all your kind posts, actually it all went a bit weird. Ended up being under anaesthetic for 3 hours instead of 40 mins, apparently they found 'red spots' inside the bladder & had to cauterise them (?).
Very groggy & confused afterwards, thought I worked in hospital & was trying to get out of bed & start work Confused. Came home late, thought I was being totally normal but DH tells me this morning I was being extremely odd & not making much sense. Today I feel dizzy, groggy & it kills when I wee. Got to go to work tomorrow so hope feeling better x

OP posts:
sunnyhills · 21/02/2017 09:46

Oh ,so sorry to hear that .You need more info about the red spots don't you ?
Ring secretary of consultant ?

When you're feeling better .You're clearly not feeling better - hence planning to go to work tommorrow .DONT GO TO WORK TOMMORROW .

Phone now and explain you can't .After a 3 hour op the aneasthetic will not be out of your system yet .

As mentioned up thread - civic duty .NHS have just invested money in you ,don't fritter it away by invoking possible complications by going back to work too early . There's probably a reason why it kills to wee - things need to heal .Rest and sleep will speed recovery .

GOING BACK TO WORK WONT .

Phone call and bed >>>>stern look

sunnyhills · 21/02/2017 10:04

And ,i'm thinking maybe drink lots of water to dilute your wee and also flush the drugs out of your system .

maltesersarethedevil · 21/02/2017 10:13

I second no work tomorrow.

Sorry you're feeling crappy

louisehamham · 21/02/2017 10:38

I've just been promoted at work (that sounds a bit grand, actually it's just more workload for same money), one of Senior Management called meeting tomorrow to discuss 'going forward' (yawn / cringe).
Feel l'll look like a weak fool if I'm not there. Especially if he knows it's bladder related...almost as bad as 'ladies problems' (he's that type of boss).

OP posts:
Waterfeature · 21/02/2017 10:41

DVLA won't allow you to drive for 48 hours after GA. I was told not to cook, do housework or sign important documents in that time as well. Surely work falls in the same category? You don't need to say what procedure you've had, just that you've had an operation under GA and medical advice is as above.

LatinForTelly · 21/02/2017 10:42

I sympathise, OP. I had a cystoscopy ages ago - late nineties - and the worst thing about it was the weeing afterwards. The first time I fainted with the pain as noone had told me to expect it! I had very hefty painkillers and made sure I was dosed up before I went. You can even wee in the bath which is a bit gross but needs sometimes must.

I really don't think you should go to work tomorrow.

SloanyAnne · 21/02/2017 10:50

Don't go to work unless you've checked with your car insurance company. Also, it might be better not to go if you have post GA mushy brain as you might not come across as the shit hot staff member that you clearly areSmile

Natsku · 21/02/2017 11:01

Def don't go to work tomorrow OP

Hope they find out the cause of your cystitis. Was going to wonder how you managed to get GA for it but seeing as they had to cauterise those red spots that explains it! Although you did miss out on seeing what the inside of your bladder looks like Grin (have had two cystoscopies while awake and enjoyed watching the camera view on the screen!)

sunnyhills · 21/02/2017 11:15

Well if there's a going forward meeting that's yet another reason not to go in ( not that another reason is needed ) .

Sometimes risking looking weak takes more strength than feigning it .You have to be strong here ,you know there's no point dragging yourself in and then getting an infection and being off for longer .

And I agree ,they don't need details . You had a 3 hour op and have been told to rest.

Lissette · 21/02/2017 12:08

You need to rest Louise . At least it is over now and hopefully it will stop your cystitis problems.

louisehamham · 21/02/2017 12:35

Thanks all you lovely people. The GP mentioned 'interstatial cystitis' (not sure if that's correct) a while back, I've googled it but all a bit vague. Has anyone ever heard of it / had it?
