baby has been a bit unsettled the last few days and im not sure if she might be teething. i couldnt find the calpol so i gave her half a disprol (which is okay to take). didnt realise until i had given it her that i dissolved it in tap water and not cooled boiled. it was only 2.5mil in a syringe. will this be okay? im prob being neurotic but i wanted to check. (she's 5 months by the way)

Not an expert, but thought they could have tap water from 6 months anyway. I'm sure 2.5 mls is dead unlikely to cause any probs anyway - look at it this way - when you wash your baby's face a bit of tap water will go in her mouth, and thats OK.

I'm not sure but my dd is same age and she drinks her bath water and is ok

Not much help but may make you smile

I'm no expert but at 5mos I wouldn't have thought it would be the end of the world, presumably she's puttng things in her mouth and it's all starting to be a bit less sterile now anyway? You could call nhs direct and I'm sure they'll be able to advise you more. 0845 4647 I think but google if that's wrong.

When i was 9 and a proud auntie to my nephew, my sister used to get me making up the bottles with the sma, i did it with tap water from day 1 not knowing any better till one day my sister saw me and went mental but nephew is now 14 and 6 foot something so it didnt do him much harm. He was about 8 months old when I learnt that wasnt the way to do it!

when dd1 was 5 months I found her sucking on the sole of dh's shoe... she was fine and I stopped worrying about sterilising everything!!!
More than likely she'll be fine!

My birth to five book given to me by the HV says that tap water needn't be boiled by the time babies are 6 months old.
Mine has also been unsettled for a few days nightowl. I'm loathe to put it down to teething as his sister didn't get her first tooth until she was 13 months old, and I was convinced she was teething from the age of 3 months!
Some babies get periods of 'brain growth' which means they can be unsettled for a few days, but when they come out of it you usually notice they have started doing something new, like rolling or saying 'da-da'. So whenever my ds starts screaming and crying for no good reason at 4am, I usually think "Aw bless, he's having a brain growth day!" before cursing and swearing so loudly that I inadvertently wake dh up! Oh dear!

nightowl, we all worry frantically about things liked this after we've done them, but remember how safe UK tapwater is and how you can stop boiling it when they are six months. Hope she is feeling better soon.
bbensley I found dd (ten months) sucking her baby flannel which had been wallowing in soapy, maybe even widdled-in, bathwater, last night.

bbensley · 25/06/2004 10:04

mmmmmm nice Marina

Just on another topic slightly - what IS this thing about drinking bath water??? My dd's been trying to drink hers since she was about 6 months old. She's now 20 months old and understands so many things but she STILL tries to drink it and seems to have a blind spot about it. She's got a bit of eczema so has to have 'oilatum' in it so it must taste revolting.
