My nephew has been type 1 diabetic for most of his young life but on top of this he has now been confirmed as coeliac. Does anyone have first hand experience of this?
I'd like to give my sister some practical help with family meals (she's on a tight budget and also needs food that doesn't require masses of preparation)
So far I've thought of casseroles and potatoes, rissotos, roast dinners, fish pie and hearty soups and have suggested freezing portions in batches which are carb counted.
At the moment she feels overwhelmed by it all (and isn't the keenest home cook at the best of times). Any shared experiences or tips on coping would be great......thanks

Gluten free pasta with a home-made sauce. Bolognaise. Chicken drumsticks. Probably easiest to cook from scratch for most things, and read labels. The coeliac society produce booklet (with regular updates) of acceptable gf food.

Hi,

sorry to hear about your nephew, that's a really tough combination to have to put up with at such a young age!

I have just type 1 (no celiac) but I do have regular contact with a mum of a 12 year old girl with type 1 and celiac. If you CAT me I can give you her details - she runs a support email group for parents of kids with type 1. I know that many of them on the list also have celiac.

All the best to the whole family,

Your suggestions to your sister are good ones. Your nephew will be able to get some gluten free food (bread, pasta, crackers etc) on prescription which will help with the cost as GF diet can be expensive. There is a mum who posts on this board

who has a daughter with diabetes and coeliac (quite possibly the same one that mm22bys knows - I know she has a support group for children with diabetes).

Thanks everyone, I think a support group and contact with others in a similar situation would really help her. I will try and work out how to CAT as I've not done that before. thanks again
