DS aged 10 has had conjunctivitis and a bad head cold and cough, dd got the same (she is 20 mths) adn her cough got really bad, she cries amdly every time she coughs so I took her to the docs, she said dd has bronchiolitis and if not better tomorrow on the antibiotics then she may need to be hospitalised on oxygen, I only thought she had a decent cough and cold, I feel like a bad mother. She seemed ok, chirpy enough when not coughing and eating really well... Still this was the kid who ran around when she had temp of 42 and measles...
Anyone else had anythign like this with their babies? And does it mean she will be a "chesty" kid in the future, she has been clear so far..

Poor dd. Unfortunately it is incredibly common, caused by the RSV cold virus, and one of main reasons for hospitalisation in under ones, but more prevalent over the winter. Our dd had it at 3 months but managed to avoid hospitalisation as her oxygen saturation remained ok and was monitored for the first few days. I also had no idea as to how ill she was when we went to he dr and was mortified. She recovered in a week to 10 days. Although she was quite wheezy and difficult to feed at the time she is now a healthy, if petite, almost 3 year old who has had no chest problems since.

Humidifying the air helped a lot and propping her head well up at night (cot on toilet steps and books at head end).

Wishing your dd a speedy recovery

hi, ds had this at 8 weeks old and was in hospital for 4/5 nights. the docs said he would get it again the following winter and it would be like a bad cold. he didn't get it the following year but got it again when he was just 2 yrs old and again was in hospital for 5 nights.

he was given oxygen and puked alot (both times!) and was really quite unwell but he has had no chesty illnesses apart from those, no ashthma or anything so don't worry too much.

hope she's better soon

I've done steaming the bathroom for her coughing fits, her cot is propped up with two enormous books and she has a pillow too. She seems ok once she gets into a deeper sleep but its the getting there while coughing every ten minutes that gets to her.
Thanks, I maybe do not feel so bad now...

how is she today ?

Clayhead · 24/06/2004 19:50

dd had this at 11 months, is now 2 1/2 and hasn't had anything chesty since. She didn't need antibiotics, just Calpol and Brufen and she had a lingering cough for a couple of weeks. I remember having some rough nights for a few days though.

Hope she feels a bit better today.

My dd had this at 4 months. Had to stay in over night but thankfully her oxygen levels weren't too bad so they allowed her home the next day. Not at 5(touching lots of wood as I type) she hasn't had any problems with her chest at all!!!

This may make you feel better, my DH is a peadiatrician and DS managed to get admitted to hospital from a routine asthma clinic appointment at 20 months with RSV - we hadn't realised he was so ill! He was only in 1 night but on oral steroids plus normal inhalers at home. Unfortunately he has continued to have chest problems but he had them before as well.
