I would go and see a urologist. Thats not normal and you shouldn't have to live like that.
Also, are you sure it's cystitis? i.e. have you had it checked that there is actually an infection there?
I had a skin problem 'down there' a while ago which mimicked the symptoms of cystitis....
I have also had, separately, recurrent cystitis.
Specialist told me that cranberry is pretty useless once you've actually got cystitis, but it's good as a preventative measure. (i.e. take one capsule of cranberry every day...avoid the juice as it's full of sugar).

Also have had this recurrently for years and years. Do you know what your triggers are?

The only thing that stops it for me is having constant antibiotics on prescription, and taking one pill (this is on consultant's advice) at every common trigger (sex, dehydration, being run down, etc.).

I had an operation years ago under general where they inflated my bladder as far as it would go - apparently stretching it reduces the sensitivity and likelihood of infection. It helped for a while but seems to have worn off.

The only thing I find that helps in the middle of an attack is salt and vinegar crisps. Applied orally, not topically.

As told by my urologist after pylonyphritis (spelling?? Ie serious kidney infection)

You have healthy bacteria in your bladder, repeated antibiotics kill the bacteria, they take three months to recover. While they recover you are vulnerable to further infection, which is why you get repeated infections.

Change your habits. Urinate as frequently as possible, shower before sex if possible. Definitely shower inmeadiately after sex.

Keep hydrated, cranberry juice is a placebo Coffee is dehydrating, avoid it.

You could try and avoid cruciferous veg.

Not had cystitis in 5 years

Waterfall D-Mannose is a natural way to treat UTIs, it's very effective, and although expensive, can also be used prophylactically to keep infection at bay. It is despatched the day you order, and arrives the following day. I've used it on several occasions, and now keep an emergency supply in case of new infection.

I've had a recurring episode since the start of January. It's odd. In the past I've had a bout - normal, horrible symptoms - seen GP, taken antibiotics and it's gone.

This time, I saw GP, took antibiotics, felt ok for a few days, then it came back. But the odd thing is that it was only coming back intermittently. Some days were fine. Other days, I'd suddenly get intense symptoms in the middle of the day, coming on very suddenly, lasting around three hours, then going again. For no rhyme or reason.

I took Uva Ursi from the health food shop and also bought Waterfall D-Mannose. But then symptoms came back again on Monday, so I have a new, week-long prescription from the GP (this time for Nitrofurantoin - GP said that he was seeing more and more women finding that the standard antibiotic, Trimethoprim, wasn't working anymore).

I'm on Day 3 now of taking the Nitrofurantoin - no pain on urination, but I still have lower, aching abdominal pain. I'm still taking the Watercall D-Mannose too. I'm just so fed up, though. I've never had symptoms like this before. I just want to feel normal.

Let me know how you get on, OP. Watching this thread with interest.

Thinking of you. Many of us have had cystitis and know exactly how awful it is.
