Testing for coeliac when on mostly non-wheat diet

Hi,

Is it right that there is a special test for coeliac disease that can be done when on a mostly wheat-free diet? I thought I read on here that there was a "parallel" test that could be done but GPs I have spoken to don't seem to have heard of it.

My ds has a little bit of wheat (in oats processed on mixed-use machinery etc) every day and actual wheat biscuits once a week to check how he's reacting, but he's often tired and gets more illness than others and I'm wondering if we should be testing for coeliac.

I haven't put him on a full wheat diet to do the test, because wheat makes his nose swell shut which makes sleeping, eating and drinking really really hard.

Thanks Newman Yes I'm on the same page as you. Ds was previously dairy intolerant and had his adenoids out twice, but I sorted the dairy intolerance with probiotics. It's just the wheat problem that's left now.

Having this conversation reminds me that there were a couple of wheat things previously that didn't seem to cause a reaction. I'm thinking maybe I could reintroduce those and see if they do now, because if they don't then I could use those as staples to precede a test.

That's a good idea. I also did the genetic testing as if she didn't have the genes then there was no need to go through the gluten challenge because it would come back negative. Disappointingly she had both genes so I had to push forwards. It was 6 weeks of torture as I knew how awful it made her feel. I really feel for you. It's terrible that there is not any other way at the moment to test for coeliac. Good luck
