In horrendous pain, need advice

Yesterday I went to the emergency dentist s with what I thought was an abscess. I couldn't swallow, had swelling and a white sore around my wisdom tooth, had pain around my jaw, into my neck and around the back of my skull. Couldn't eat or drink.

Dentist says it's an infection and gives me five days of amoxicillin - he couldn't give me anything else because I'm breastfeeding. He said I should start feeling better pretty soon after taking the antibiotics. That was 18 hours ago.

I've not slept. I got up at 4am to take more painkillers (30mg of codeine and a dose of paracetamol) this hasn't touched the pain. It's worse. I can't move head without it being agony. I can't swallow or open mouth.

What do I do? Ride this out today? Expect things to ease up?

I can't think straight because of pain

How are you doing today OP?

BumDNC · 02/02/2017 00:18

I had dry sockets in all 4 wisdom teeth holes after extraction in hospital and no one would treat me because I lost my mind with pain on a Sunday. Dentist said hospital. Hospital said oral surgeons. Oral dept was closed. So they just left me as I was.

I so feel for you and hope you feel better soon x

*emergency dentist that was

I'm getting worried now. I hope we aren't reading about her in the paper. That dentist really fobbed her off.

UnbornMortificado · 02/02/2017 12:18

Hopefully she's just knocked out of some decent pain relief.

I asked a dentist on here once and dentists are limited what painkillers they can prescribe and have had lawsuits in the past.

3luckystars · 03/02/2017 06:51

Are you still there?

picklemepopcorn · 03/02/2017 06:53
Confused
Chickydoo · 03/02/2017 07:03

Sounds hideous OP, hope you are ok?

3luckystars · 03/02/2017 12:57

Hello!!!! Are you ok????

shakeyospeare · 03/02/2017 14:23

Hi everyone, sorry not updated, had a really rough few days. Still couldn't get seen despite crying until my old dentist agreed to see me today. He was amazing.

He said the first dentist should have cleaned it all and inbred either the gum or tooth removing.

He's cleaned all round the tooth and gum - most horrific pain ever - thankfully he did then numb it all.

I've got hydrogen peroxide and paramol and got to go back next week to see how things are.

Still can't swallow or open mouth but feel so much better now someone's taken me seriously.

Definitely changing dentists to him, he was really kind and concerned and didn't brush off my worries - or tears.

Feel absolutely rough as toast and earache and jaw pain is a 9 but I don't feel as worried as I did.

I don't think...

Thank you all for being so nice and for all your advice, it's meant a lot to have support. Flowers

Also, I bit him repeatedly as I couldn't open mouth wide enough and he didn't bat an eyelid. Here's hoping for a better weekend...

Wow what an ordeal. Glad you got seen eventually. Did you get different antibiotics too?

shakeyospeare · 03/02/2017 14:42

No new antibiotics. Dentist said they weren't doing any good - the area needed cleaning and antibiotics should have been a second option after a thorough scrub. I have hydrogen peroxide to use 3 times a day though.

Sadly the numbing effect has worn off and I'm now off to the vets with a balding cat... oh, life!

Shakey pleased your ok-ish, I was hoping you were enjoying the affects of some decent painkillers too much to post.

MollyHuaCha · 03/02/2017 16:16

Thanks for updating OP. Hope you soon feel fully better. Smile

CoffeeCoffeeAndLotsOfIt · 03/02/2017 17:03

Haven't posted before but I have been watching this thread and was also getting quite concerned with the OP's absence.

So glad you've been seen. Yay. Hope you're now on the road to recoverySmile

Howaboutthisone · 03/02/2017 17:49

Glad to hear that someone has listened to you and that you're hopefully on the road to recovery. Thanks for updating!

teacher54321 · 03/02/2017 18:23

So glad to hear someone took you seriously. I've had dental problems this week, luckily my dentist said 'i can't leave you in this sort of pain' and did everything he could (including referring me to the hospital clinic) to get it sorted. I am now never ever going to change dentists as he was so amazing and kind Smile I do hope you start to feel better soon.

picklemepopcorn · 04/02/2017 12:47

Any better?
And how's the cat?

shakeyospeare · 04/02/2017 16:27

Hurrah! I woke up this morning and honestly felt better than I had in aaaaages! My mouth is still tender and swallowing isn't that much fun but the horrific unrelenting agony has been reduced to a level that you can almost ignore, which is amazing! Still have earache but I'm guessing that's from the swelling on a nerve from the tooth (?).

Hoping that by Thursday the dentist will be able to either make a decision on tooth removal or to cut away some of the excess gum (boak!).

The cat is fine. Cost £60 for injections and an updated flea/tick/liquid gold solution. Apparently she has terrible allergies that are being triggered by something but she's flea free so vet isn't sure if she's had a flea bite at some point that's triggered these reactions.

It's been a delightful week for unexpected medical costs. Thank god for the NHS, hey! Don't know how Americans manage.

Thank you all again for all your help and support. Toothgate is almost over!
