Tooth extraction tomorrow and petrified.

Hello all

I am having my 2nd upper molar extracted tomorrow due to abscess and a big cavity.

I am petrified of dentists. However the tooth is a bit wobbly so would that make the extraction easier and quicker?

Also i am worried about the amount of bleeding i will have afterwards.

I suffer with health anxiety so worry about the littlest thing.

Im not scared of the actual procedure just how long it will take and the aftermath.

I'd only have it warm not hot.

DamsonGinIsMyThing · 10/01/2017 19:39

I was told nothing warm or hot for 24 hours

Glad you've got it out!

Governoress86 · 10/01/2017 19:52

I have only managed to drink half of a warm cup of tea as im still sore so going to stick to water tonight.

Thank you for all the replies and advice

Picking up on your fear of blood, just to warn you there might be a clot that comes loose in a couple of days. Are you teasing the stitches with your tongue?

Governoress86 · 10/01/2017 20:12

I havent got stitches in. With the blood its just when i cant get something to stop bleeding.

OP I'm so glad it went well.

Hope you managed something to eat and drink. I was never told to it have hot stuff, only that you shouldn't rinse or swill your mouth out as it might dislodge the clot. I ate soup about 3 hours after my extractions and was fine. I was starving by the time it was over!!

AliciaMayEmory · 10/01/2017 21:52

Obviously no hot stuff whilst still numb as you risk burning, but I assume your numbness has worn off by now.

Governoress86 · 10/01/2017 22:03

I managed to eat some pasta a couple of boiled eggs and half a cup of tea.

Im so glad its over and im just sore now, was in a bit of pain earlier but that has subsided.

I was told the same as Alicia and it was fine. Also to rinse (gently at first) with warm salt water.

And if it did start bleeding again, repeat the gauze biting.

TheMortificadosDragon · 10/01/2017 22:09

X-post - oh, good, I'm glad you're not (unnecessarily!) going to bed hungry.

Governoress86 · 10/01/2017 22:22

My dentist told me not to rinse until after 24 hours has passed. I think it just depends on a dentists preference.

It hasnt started bleeding again just tasting a bit of blood now and again

Don't rinse out for 24hrs OP; the rinsing action disturbs the clot which is essential for healing. Luke warm tea for 24hrs also-anything hot dilates the blood vessels in the extraction site and post-op bleeding is a risk.
After 24 hrs rinse out with HSMW 1tsp salt per mug. Aim for 6 mugs HSMW per day & do this for a week.

Governoress86 · 11/01/2017 13:54

I havent rinsed yet and just drinking luke warm tea. Im just feeling a bit sore in my mouth, cheekbone and jaw and have a bit of a headache but i think that is because i didnt sleep well again last night. All in all im not in any pain which is good.

I feel loads better since yesterday.
