itchy mole

My son is 8 years old, he has had a mole on his back for about 2 years, just recently he has said that it is itching. I noticed yesterday that it is a bit scabby and he actually took the top off and made it bleed last night. Does anyone know if I should be concerned about this or should I just keep an eye on it for now?

Take him to the doctor. It's always better to be safe than sorry with moles, especially if they change in any way. It's probably just bleeding because he's scratched it but itching is a warning sign so you should get it checked out.

I had a raised mole (also on my back) which bled and then disappeared altogether. I had already made an appointment to have it removed and the doctor did still go ahead to make sure it was nothing nasty which it wasn't. I would get the doctor to have a look just for peace of mind.

My ds had one on his back which itched periodically and did grow bigger (ended up about the size of a penny and quite raised). He had it removed a few months ago, he was 15, and it was checked no problems but he's pleased it's gone at last as it had annoyed him for years.

Definitely have it checked. Removal was painless and ds is extreme wuss. He was not allowed games for three weeks after but healed very quickly.

Took my son to the docs last night and been told he needs the mole removed. Does anyone know how they will remove it?

My ds had his removed under local anaesthetic, a few stitches and a waterproof dressing which meant he could shower etc as normal. Very quick and simple procedure - just told to be excused from sport for about three weeks but tbh was well recovered by this time. Don't worry. (He did have his done in a hospital but gps can also do it)

I've had some removed under local. The worst bit by far is the locan anaesthetic going in! The first one (a falt one) was done in hoospital as a day patient and the other 2 (small raised, rubbed on bra strap!) were done by my GP. No pain or discomfort afterwards bar the usual annoying pricking of stitches.

thankyou for the replies. With him only being 8 will he have to have a needle? He is scared of needles and I know he will kick up a fuss and he is a very big lad (rugby player!!)

I've had several skin growths removed. I did all three of them with no local anaesthetic and just a doctor with a sharp scalpel. It really doesn't feel as bad as it sounds. In fact, the first time, I was still waiting for him to remove the growth and he'd already done it. At the worst, it was no worse than a paper cut. I would have thought a shot of local anaethetic would have been worse.
