General health

This "cold". Week 3 and feeling it will never end. Still coughing up gunk.

I've got so many drugs I'm rattling - antibiotics, puffers, eye drops, I've been coughing so much my throat is raw as if I've got a new bug. Have had temperature, green gunk, conjunctivitis, my breathing is still tight, and my eyes are still not fully cleared after a week of drops.

If this is what the queen has had, I'm not surprised she bloody opted out.

Btw, know 5 others who have it, just not the breathing probs.

Thanks for amy advice, light at end of tunnel etc.

I have a finger sats monitor (since a dr missed ds1s pneumonia a couple of years ago!) and my sats are ok.
Temp not sure - I feel warm but I'm taking so many painkillers it's prob masking any temp.
What is adenovirus?

Report
lborgia · 14/01/2017 19:21

So most colds come from rhinovirus, bit if you're unlucky it can be adenovirus, which is what this seems to be. ..I went for Swan results back yesterday but it showed absolutely nothing which gp said can happen. .so that was worthwhile. One feature of adenovirus is that it copes with high temperatures so I guess it just won't die off in the way others do. .hence the very long illness.

It can also cause stomach upset, uti, conjunctivitis, all sorts. I've had all these in the last 3 weeks so convinced this is what I have.

DH and DS both have much milder versions.

I remember my dad and I having something similar in the 70s... and I'm mostly resigned now to just waiting it out. Except that I'm not.

Pp (sorry, on mobile so can't see names) who's heavily pregnant, it might be worth asking if there is any point to antivirals after the baby is born? Absolutely no idea, straw clutching on your behalf.

It's been up to 110 this week so I think it's not helping that we're all dealing with extreme cold or heat -

I'd love to know what they used to treat the Queen.

Day 14 and a 10 day stretch of fever relieved by paracetamol but they can't be taken 4 hourly. They wear off and I want to die again,

BIL has a chest infection on top of this virus and he still feels ill because the antibiotics are not touching the viral side. Also feeling feverish.

Although I'm coughing up a mountain of gunk, and onto my second box of tissues I don't think it's a chest infection. No difficulty breathing just my chest full of muck and the relentless coughing is killing me.

This is really the worse cold I have ever had.

I now think I'm going to be sick. Saliva flooding my mouth.

Of course everything aches and my head falling off.

Yes I think it's worth investing in a finger sats monitor, especially if, like me, you have an underlying health condition such as asthma. Mine has
Always been very well controlled and under review at GP
Suregery everything ok, so it blindsided me to have an attack in hospital- very scary. I think what is so horrible about this is the length of
time it goes on for!

Queen...I'm still hacking up green gunk and now it's coming from my sinuses too.
Ds1 has started coughing too and he is asthmatic so off to the dr to get him checked tomorrow!
I'm not sure whether to go back myself and get signed off for the week...
Our sats are ok tbh but I've found the monitor puts my mind at rest re ds1 if he is ill.

I'm thinking of asking to be signed off work

I would Badders, there's just no point in pushing it, it really will slow down the process of recovery I reckon.

I've got to a point where I feel ok for an hour after I get up - mixture of puffer, coffee and paracetamol I suppose - try and get the place looking less hovel-like, but then collapse back in to bed.

Badders bad form to ref another thread, but I bet you have a nice tranquil room to be poorly in; my room looks like a laundry after stuff got stashed in here while dh had friends over yesterdayAngry - the rest of the house looks good but I ran out of steam by the time I got in here - next time I'll start in here!

Hope you all get some decent sleep - and fwiw, having the antibiotics and getting rid of the green gunk had helped. ..just the viral bit alone is enough.

My bedroom isn't too bad - I'm in denial about the rest of the house if I don't see it it's not bad, right!?
Poor ds1 is suffering - temp and nasty cough
Not much sleep for me tonight I think!

Oh god someone help me. My head is SO bad, I've had a headache since Wednesday which only co codamol can ease (and then not completely). Back to the doctor in the morning but in the meantime I can't sleep, can't think and am struggling to see this to type - it's awful. Back to bury my head under the pillow again.... feeling very sorry for myself.

Can I join you in the sick club?

I've had this rubbish thing since Christmas - mostly a cough and feeling breathless but recently my head has started feeling explody and I'm filling up with snot (attractive).

Still hanging in at work. Although coughing myself into a vomit in front of a class of 32 was a delight. I really really don't want to take time off.

Going to cave and make an appointment with the GP today!

Can I join too?

Started last Monday with what seemed like the start of a migraine which I managed to go home for a couple of hours to sleep the worst off before going back to work. Then since then I've had scratchy throat, sore throat, cough, headache - all getting progressively worse.
Yesterday started coughing up foul tasting green gunk, feeling absolutely awful. Last night coughed and coughed and coughed all night long but nothing coming out.
This morning my lungs feel like they're burning, I'm a bit wheezy and my bones hurt. Temperature is about 38 after paracetamol.

Don't really want to bother the gp if this is just a cold, but I feel so bloody awful.

Rest
Fluids
Painkillers
Unless you have an underlying health condition (like asthma or diabetes) antibiotics won't help - I've had two lots!!
I'm only taking ds because he is asthmatic and has had pneumonia in the past
And I need a sick note - I'm on my knees here - 32 days and counting....
Love to all with this awful bug

Just back from the doctors - I cried, pathetically but she was very sympathetic. No further ailments have emerged it's just a particularly shitty bout of tonsillitis and I still have a temperature. She's advised taking more co-codamol, she said max dose for a week to 10 days will be fine and if it's the only thing that helps then for gods sake take it. Back to bed now. Good luck to everyone, whichever version you have!

Badders123 · 16/01/2017 11:17

Poor you - co codamol is great 👍 and tonsillitis is hideous
Poor ds is on a weeks worth of antibiotics and 5 days of high dose steroids 😞
Dr signed me off for a week which I hope will help - although now of course I will be looking after ds!
Dh away next week - I'm dreading it!

Try and rest when you can, or at least do the minimum. Luckily I only have one DS at home now and he drives himself to school. House looks like a tip and there's very little food but hopefully I'll be up to a shop soon. I have no appetite so it's hard to think what to buy. Hopefully next week we'll all feel better. I'm just up to take my next dose of pills and then bed again - Radio 4 is a lifesaver, even though I can't concentrate it's useful having the chat in the background.

All five of us had this in the weeks running up to Christmas. It was grim. And we had the puking bug right in the middle of it too.
It finally ended though. There is hope on the horizon!

Badders. Just stay off sick, you are fit for nothing with this Sad

The house is a tip and I've moved into the spare bedroom for the duration. It's wrecked. Acres of snot coming from god knows where. Used 2 boxes of tissues and starting on the loo roll.

DH supposed to take up the slack but so long as he gets me the drugs and cups of tea I don't give a toss.

Day 11 of unremitting fever. 38.7 this am. How can that be? It didn't even start with a fever!

Familiar with the cough, cough, cough, vomit 🤢 I know my chest is not infected as no pain and can breath deeply.

No appetite, no taste, yet stomach feels as though it's eating itself. So hungry but feel sick.

I did find something that helped with the dry part of the cough. Small amount of hot water, honey, turmeric and ground ginger. Did seem to stop the pointless coughing. May be a fluke tho

I too am worried about overdose as I can barely hold out 5 hours between doses of co codomol let alone 6.

I am back in bed
Taken ds2 to his hospital appt and made a start in dinner (not that I'm having any!)
Ds1 has perked up slightly since his dose
Of steroids
Queen-I cough til I retch too - it sucks
The Dr we saw today said that EVERYONE she has seen today has had it - or still has it
It's a virulent bug for sure
It's in my sinuses now
Which is great fun 😖

I see the light! I finally slept through last night, and really have starting feeling better in the last 24 hours. ..

frosty - you have a son who can drive, why do you need to go food shopping? ?

Ideas- fresh soup (if you can afford it), squash, lemons, fresh ginger and honey. Couple of slices of fresh ginger in your lemon and honey really makes a difference.
Your favourite things, whether it's pork pie or maltesers..at this stage you need calorific stuff. Christmas chocolate got me through my weakest moments.

BTW , all those taking Co codamol - make sure you have a laxative or at least some dried apricots/prunes. ..even one dose can slow your gut down. Taking it several times a day you'll not be able to go for days. .
And they are incredibly strong - if you don't have asthma try alternating with nurofen. . Then you can takesomethingevery 4 hours. ...

And water. ..Lots and lots, mostly hot, tea, anything. .i found hot marmite brilliant for my throat.

Olympia, suddenly getting new symptoms seems to be part of it, but if you've had a temp that long and it is"new" in the grand scheme if things, you may well have a secondary infection - not necessarily your chest but sinuses?

I need to do some laundry and I have both kids home as it's the summer holidays here. ..must try not to go full guns otherwise I'll be back in bed .

Good luck all BrewFlowers
