Then try reducing the amount? He might stay awake longer (oh, to have had that problem!) if he has to spend longer getting his calories. Also, and it's a side issue I know, but you won't be able to build up your supply unless he does it for you, iykwim.

Hi there. My dd used to do that, sometimes it seemed as though she ould go to sleep and not really wake for 2 days!!
We had to make her wait for her feeds as if i fed her too quickly on waking she would go straight back to sleep. She is now 5months and awake a lot more!

WriggleJiggle · 19/02/2007 17:06

Make the most of the peace and quiet .
If he is alert and 'normal' the rest of the time then he's probably fine. dd used to do a huge ammount of sleeping whenever she learnt anything new. Yuo might find in a day or so he wakes up suddenly able to bash his playgym or whatever.

I'd agree with the previous comments about b/f him as often as you can to build up your supply. It does work and makes life so much easier than faffing with bottles if you don't have to.

My ds was awake once for a total of about 8 hours in a 36 hour period. I was so scared, I took him to the doctor's who said he looked fine. Agree that you need to go by how alert he is when he is awake...

Also have 9 week old. By comparison I'd say he sounds pretty much the same - if he's sleeping that much and is quite alert when he is awake he sounds quite content
He has the same overall daytime and nighttime sleep as my ds, though split differently - I wake him at 7 and he has his first nap at 8:30 for an hour and a half, then 30 mins at 4:30. (MId-day the same.) I put him down at 7 and he takes half an hour to settle, so effectively he's 7:30 to 7.
My only thought was that if he only takes a 2 oz feed in the night and at 5 pm could you maybe stretch him a little longer, so that he takes a bigger feed 45 mins - 1 hour later? I say this because I dropped the split feed about 3 weeks ago (the 5 pm one), bathing him instead at 5:30 so that I'm ready to feed him at 6 by which time he's ravenous. Ds2 can be a very sleepy feeder and it still takes an hour to fill him up but that way I've finally broken the cycle of cluster feeding early evening and he is fairly happy to settle for the night. Ds2 was also persuaded to drop the night feed after several nights in a row of taking only 2 oz, so it might be something to think about for your ds.
