Antibiotics - how long before you're supposed to start feeling better?

expatinscotland · 19/02/2007 13:30

I had to see an out of hours doctor on Saturday.

Have infection in both sinuses, both ears and my chest - left lung is deeper infection.

This is my third full day on the antibiotics course, and I'm still feeling weak and rubbish, although slightly better.

How long before you have to go back to the doctor because it's not working?

This is sucking big time. My chest really hurts at night.

i asked my doctor this last time and he said three days and you should notice an improvement. if it was me, i'd go back if it didnt seem to be working after five days. good luck.

expatinscotland · 19/02/2007 13:39

I'm going back tomorrow because I'm going to need signed off. I can't wait till Wednesday for that.

I'm still hacking up green bits of hard mucus, my face is still puffy and painful and the glands in my neck are sore to the touch.

I feel weak, too.

Had to take co-codamol to sleep last night because my chest hurt so much.

Oh my god, it sounds awful expat .
Poor you.

I don't really know the proper answer but with my dd who has AB's a lot, she usually perks up after a few days. I was going to take her back the the gps when this course is finished though to check she's all clear. Its her 3rd lot since start of year. I want to make sure the infection is all cleared up. For sure.

expatinscotland · 19/02/2007 13:53

I think the dose is too low to clear it.

It's definitely still here as there's still plenty of green mucus.

But as I need signed off I'm going to have to go to open surgery tomorrow morning.

The glands in my throat aren't happy.

Tomorrow's my birthday and DD2's appointment to have her MMR and pneumoccocal booster, too.

Hope this doesn't mean another shite year.

princessmel · 19/02/2007 14:05

Green mucus, yuk

What a shame. You'll have to postpone the jab and your birthday till you're better.

expatinscotland · 19/02/2007 14:13

Nah, she's still getting the jabs!

Don't want to put it off because DD1 is at nursery school and already bringing home all kinds of nastiness.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 19/02/2007 14:15

I feel bad because I've already taken three days off work for this damn thing.

But it's not like I asked for it.

You should start to feel better now. Might not be right antibiotic. It would be good to send a specimen of tha lovely green mucus to the lab you know. Ask if he wants a specimen tomorrow. What ABs are you on?

BettySpaghetti · 19/02/2007 14:17

DS had antibiotics a couple of weeks ago for a chest infection -he was still really unwell on day 3 too.

I phoned NHS Direct who said to give them a while longer to have the full effect and to give max doses of Calpol and Nurofen. He was noticably better on days 4 and 5.

Hope you feel better soon

brimfull · 19/02/2007 14:18

princessmel · 19/02/2007 14:18

I always used to feel bad when I needed to take time off. Its crazy.
I felt bad as I was a nanny and it mucked up my work family's whole day.

Is your dd under 2? Is it that menningitis jab for under 2's?. My dd was supposed to have it but I still haven't done it. She's always poorly and I couldn't face her having reactions from the jabs too. I will do it soon.

expatinscotland · 19/02/2007 14:18

Amoxycillin.

Problem is, I need signed off if I can't go in tomorrow, day 4 on these damn things.

I haven't really improved much at all, just enough to get things done.

I've had a LOT of sinus infections. I'm starting to think this AB might be losing effectiveness on mine.

OP posts:
princessmel · 19/02/2007 14:21

Don't say that. dd has had 3 lots since new year. I really hope that doesn't happen.

You've probably got it so bad that its just taking longer to clear. An excuse for more mn time.

expatinscotland · 19/02/2007 14:21

Yes, princess, it's the pneumoccocal jab.

DD2 is a bit snotty, but it's all clear snot with no other symptoms and she's teething lots.

OP posts:
mears · 19/02/2007 14:21

Since it is in your chest you would be better with big guns antibiotic like augmentin or cephalexin. Needs changed.

expatinscotland · 19/02/2007 14:21

Come to think of it, I did a course on this dose year before last and it failed to clear. I had to take a higher dose.

Damn.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 19/02/2007 14:22

Thanks, mears.

It's mainly my chest that's bugging me now.

I've just finished a course of amoxycillen for similar - and I fear it will break out again. I wonder has it lost its power? Hate antibiotics - I have had 5 days off work, which I have never had since I was 21 (pathetic cough).

expatinscotland · 19/02/2007 14:51

I've had that happen to me already, st, w/amoxycillin.

One year, I had a sinus infection that took over a month on ABs to clear.

Some doctor finally took pity on me and gave me a big gun AB that knocked it out.

I went into work w/my arse dragging because it was in the States where you have to go to work except on your deathbed.

I've got a dodgy left lung as it is because one year I got influenza and went back in to work after 3 days and wound up in hospital with pneumonia.

OP posts:
stleger · 19/02/2007 14:58

I wait 3 - 4 days before going to dr, when it is obviously not going away I go in and have to plead. I'm sure amoxy. didn't clear me up last year, but I end up grateful for a prescription and a short lecture on antibiotic overuse... Hope you are better soon, is it cold and damp there?

expatinscotland · 19/02/2007 15:01

Yes, these lectures on antibiotic overuse.

Yes, doctor, but didn't you just tell me I had an infection a few days ago, and that's why I'm coughing and blowing out all this green mucus and running a low grade fever?

Um, isn't baceterial infection why people are supposed to use antibiotics?

And now, a few days later, I'm still blowing out and coughing up green mucus and running a low grade fever.

So, just using a+b=c, it would go to follow that the AB you gave me isn't working.

Duh.

Luckily, I changed surgeries and don't have to listen to git lecturing me for falling ill.
