Are futon mattresses good or bad for your back?

I'm sure I've heard claim and counter-claim on this. Am looking for bunkbeds atm and have found one where the bottom bunk can turn into a chair if you want it to but the mattress is a futon. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Would DD (4) develop a super-back or would it be bad for her back? Anyone know?

We always use futons, and believe they are good for your back.

That being said a) we use thick futons and b) a futon that is meant to fold in half and become a chair, isn't likely to be a good one.

We got ours from Alphabeds, and their (top of the line) futons are good.

I think that moving from a soft bed to a hard, or vice versa, is hard on your back and takes adjusting.

Hmmm. Am thinking maybe a fold up into a chair one wouldn't be a good idea.

But wonder if it would be any worse than an average cheap bunk bed.

Probably no worse.

Another gotcha with a cheaper futon - you can sometimes feel the slats it's on, through the futon . Better to have it not on slats then ...

Hmm. Am going off futon idea.
