small girls and cleaning their bits.....

sorry if this is tmi for some but if I can't ask here where can I? to what extent do dds need to clean all their little creases etc? I'm afraid mine kind of give themselves a bit of a scrub with a flannel. (trying really hard to work out how to word this....) whereas when I'm having a shower myself I'll have quite a rummage - and make sure water has sluiced its way through all the bits and pieces. I'm worried that the flannel business isn;t really doing its job...

I wonder about this too (welcome back, btw!).

fizzbuzz · 18/02/2007 20:32

So would I!

JackieNo · 18/02/2007 20:32

I think it's all mostly self-cleaning, isn't it, and just sitting in the bath and having a bit of a scrub with a flannel ought to be mostly enough, at least until they hit puberty? Prepared to be corrected on that though.

Eulalia · 18/02/2007 20:33

Shower should be OK, with soap and a bit of a 'rummage' also if your dd will let her do it. We recently installed a new bathroom with a bidet which works wonders for those bits.

Hulababy · 18/02/2007 20:33

I wouldn't encourage them to do much more than what they are doing TBH. Think it is unnecssary and actually could encourage problems if getting soap, etc. up there, Think it is supposed to be self cleaning on the whole.

motherinferior · 18/02/2007 20:37

But DD1 does get, ahem, a bit of thrush from time to time. It's not that self-cleaning.

theheadgirl · 18/02/2007 20:41

I agree. No need for soap "up there", one of the main things I try to teach my girls is how to wipes their bottom properly after a poo- front to back only, don't rewipe with same bit of loo paper. If they've got that sussed, sitting in a bath or a quick wash with a shower is fine. Its different when the area is pubic hair free - sorry TMI! But the hair does trap sweat, and needs soap/shower gel.

foxinsocks · 18/02/2007 20:41

let them clean it with water - generally all around the creases (like we would do I guess)

wouldn't do it with soap - those bits are quite sensitive (dd gets eczema there and I can still only clean with water round there )

theheadgirl · 18/02/2007 20:42

And re your point motherI, soap is more likely to encourage thrush than plain water as it washes off the "good" bacteria - have you found that?

motherinferior · 18/02/2007 20:44

I hadn't thought about soap making things worse. Thank you.

Wish DsoddingP wouldn't always put that bubbly stuff in either. Must remind him.

hatwoman · 18/02/2007 20:47

glad it wasn;t a stupid question! dd2 looks like she's got thrush at the moment - its red and sore and with (tmi alert) white bits here and there - she's totally refusing to let me clean, or to do it herself. I'm just wondering if we need better habits in general which would help avoid this situation in the first place.

foxinsocks · 18/02/2007 20:48

yes no bubbly - very bad for those with sensitive bits (sets off thrush in dd every time without fail)

Katymac · 18/02/2007 20:48

It's the bubbles woith glitter that really pee me off

I have very sensative skin - DD doesn't but that sends her up the wall

Bloody birthday presents

fizzbuzz · 18/02/2007 20:49

I read somewhere about cleaning with cotton wool and baby oil.

Very good before you have to go for any sort of horrid internal examination.

Sorry as others if this is TMIGin

fizzbuzz · 18/02/2007 20:49

Grrrr , although gin would be quite nice....not on private parts though!

motherinferior · 18/02/2007 20:49

A refresher course in bottom-wiping never goes amiss, I find.

Parenthood is so demeaning.

theheadgirl · 18/02/2007 20:55

Yup, after motherhood you will discuss, and display all parts of your anatomy! Especially after they are washed in glittery bubble bath

Bekks · 18/02/2007 20:59

I leave dd (3) to have general rummage around in shower - not as thorough as my own rummage I'm sure, but seems to do the job. Occasionally if she's a bit sore I'll have a rummage for her to try to make sure she's clean. I find this quite hard to address with her sometimes, as I learned from my mum that you had to wash girls bits well because they smell and so I'm keen not to pass this on.
