dd2 has always been sicky. in nov she had an appt with paed at the local hospital. they just said as there was no pattern to her sickness there was nothing they could do. Last month gp said she had reflux, and gave us infant gaviscon to try. so far no improvement. so today took her back to the gp and we have been referred back to the hospital again. i am so fed up with all this. i want some idea of whats going on ,whether she has an itolerence, whether its a physcial problem or whther its linked to anything else. feel like we're going round and round in circles.

Oh misdee, really sorry to hear about all of this. How old is dd2? I'm sure other mums with babes with reflux can comment on this (my ds had colic). Atleast maybe they can describe symtoms to see if it is similar to your dd2.

Bumping it up the list..

she is 21months now. she is no better at all. but because she is thriving (a bouncing 16kg) they dont see it as a problem. but i feel that clearing up sick on average 3-4times a week with no other symptons is a problem. on bad days she will throw up several times, always projectile vomiting. she just vomits and carries on.

Do you keep a food diary or an activity diary? My ds is sicky when he's had certain foods, eg. cauliflour. If dd2's ok the majority of the time would that actually be reflux? I thought it happened more often than a few times a week (but then again I haven't any experience of it).

A friend of mine's ds gets terribly car sick (now 12mo) and was a very sicky baby (but it has eased alot). He still is sick on the odd day but wasn't diagnosed with reflux.

It must be very frustrating with you especially when the experts just can't work it out.

misdee · 18/06/2004 22:06

i thought it may be motion sickness but it happens on day when she hasnt been in the car, in fact for the first 7months she only went in car once a week. i thought reflux would happen more than a few times a week ,,but i thought it may be worth a try with the gaviscon. I havent kept a food diary in relation to this, but she will throw up hours after eating. there is no apparent pattern.

she was also gluten and egg free for the 1st year as i thought this was causing it, as she did vomit heavily after goods containing gluten. she also couldnt tolerate berry based desserts. i really do feel she has some imtolerence to something, but really want the medical team behind me at the hospital to help us thro it. I have looked at elimanation diets b4 and its hard work.
We all know vomit smells horrid, but dd2's vomit is the smelliest most rancid i have ever had to deal with. i can deal with vomit, even other peoples kids vomit, but dd2 vomit really churns my stomache up when clearing it up.

I know it's hard clearing it up, especially if you have carpet. A little sodium bicarb helps with the smell.

I do think a food diary will help. DS can vomit hours after caulifour or cabbage, eg. even one meal later, but I've just gotten to know that's the cause and now avoid those veg. I also think you have to use gaviscon regularly, eg for 3-4 days, before you see a result. It might be misleading as that's her vomit timeframe iykwim.

Have you had a referral to a dietician? A quick google found this . HTH

misdee · 18/06/2004 22:42

the first step is paedicatrics, then they refer on to someone else. we have been giving the gaviscon for weeks, and in the last week has vomited 3 times. once in dh new car. We have laminate everywhere, mainly for dd1 allergies, but its been so much easier than carpet cleaning. but i do need to get the sofa cleaned professionally as altho its been cleaned each time vomit hits it, it looks grubby (dh choose a black sofa)

Misdee, sounds like Gastroesophageal Reflux and/or Hiatal Hernia. Neither is too serious and usually goes on its own. You can find more info here Good luck. I had the same with my ds, but luckily he outgrew it no long after he started on solids. My throws up from coughing from post nasal drip every time she gets a cold. I have timber or stone floors everywhere and washable sofa covers.

just thought i would also recommend a food diary...some allergies can take up to 24hrs to appear! this makes it vey hard to link the sickness with a particular food. as well as writing down everything eaten (even if its just a bite of something) also write down time she was sick.

misdee · 19/06/2004 07:07

will start a food diary, guess i better get a small notebook and pen to take everywhere with us.
My brother was dx with relfux about 2yrs ago. but it turned out to be more serious. he lost loads of weight, and they found out that the tube running from his throat to stomache (i cant remember what it is called) was closing up. he doesnt have the flap of muscles to keep the stomache part closed and suffers bad heartburn most of the time. he had to have an op last yr where they out a balloon down his throat and infalted it to try and keep the tube open, as it was so small by that point he wasnt able to eat anything without bringing it up. nothing was actually going into the stomache as it was just sitting in the tube.
he seems better now (1yr on), has put weight back on and says that alcohol is a trigger for him, so he doesnt drink.

I'm sorry that you and your dd2 are having such a grip time. We had a similar thing with ds (but not quite as bad). When he was smaller he would vomit all of his last feed 12 nights out of 14. Things did improve with time and I hope that the same will be true for your dd2.

Ds is still a bit sicky (aged 4), but he is mostly over it now. We never found a pattern or a trigger. He still vomits when he coughs a lot, but will now get himself to the bathroom

Hope that things get better soon

Hi misdee, keeping a food diary is a pain at first, but after a few days it becomes second nature. I had to do the same thing to find out what triggered my migraine (also wrote down when I had a headache and a migraine, as gloworm suggests). When you're determined enough to find a cause you just seem to click into doing it all the time. A pattern or some information will come to light.

Hope your dd improves soon.

misdee, what your brother has is what I've posted the link for....read the info, it's a pretty good site with lots of diagrams and links.
