I think Dd1 has slapped cheek. She has a rash on her cheeks, arms and legs, it's a flat red lacy sort of rash.

My friends dd had it last week and it was confirmed as slapped cheek by the gp and her rash is identical to Dd's.

On the NHS site it says that once the rash is out the child is not contagious but I can't see school taking that point of view with her looking as she does right now.

I haven't taken dd to the g.p either, should I, just to get it confirmed ??

Incubation period is 14 days, once the rash is out she is no longer contagious. School should know this, if she feeling ok just send her in with a note or speak to teacher

Ok will do that then, she wants to go anyway, and I want her to go to LOL.

My dd2 has it atm, has been really ill Fri/sat but seems a lot better today (fingers crossed) and its out half term this week and she is supposed to be on a swimming course.

Am I right in thinking she isn't contagious ?
So it depends on whether she is ill or not then?

It's a horrible thing to have as an adult and can cause problems with unborn babies, so I would avoid taking risks with it. I had it when I was 22 and was crippled with arthritis (a reaction to the virus) for nearly two years.

my school didn't want ds back till the rash had gone. Understandably in my opinion - I think that the infection may have been the reason I had a miscarriage.

I had never heard of it before this week. How long would you leave it? Dd2 has some rash on her cheeks but thats it.

NuttyMuffins · 19/02/2007 11:53

Well I took her in, told them in the office that it is not contagious once the rash is out and took the sheet I had printed off NHS direct site.

Her teacher was fine with it, but the woman in the office didn't look convinced.

Oh and they had already had 2 other people go in and say that their kids had it over the hols. Dd's teacher said one childs g.p reckoned they all caught it in the last few days of term as he had seen lots of kids with it.
