Any tips as to anything at all I can do to ease her pain with these? She's been up since 5am crying and unable to get comfortable.

So far I've been getting her to sit in a warm bath with bicarb of soda in it. She's taking piriton, and we've got calamine lotion flowing.

Anything else at all? And how long before the intense soreness / itching goes?

nearlythree (and other kind mnetters showing interest! ) she's a lot better today. In fact we haven't had one moment of sitting in the bowl of water and bicarb of soda. And thinking about it she hasn't been particularly itchy even today.

So I'm feeling much happier!

I'm amazed how it's knocked her for six though. Today is the first day she's shown any interest in eating at all for a week. People always say 'oh chickenpox, it's nothing when they're little' but I wouldn't agree with that now. I think she's been really poorly and it's definitely the most pain I've ever seen her in. She had pneumonia last year and although that was much more serious than cp it didn't create such trauma for her and wasn't so awful to see for me and dp.

So I'm bloody glad it's on the way out. There are no new spots and all the others are dried up and scabbing over. Just got to stop her fiddly fingers from picking at them now!

Thanks again, ever so much, for all the advice.

Glad she's on the mend. I hated having CP, but when I was in hospital waiting to have ds and we found that dd1 had been exposed to it I was so relieved I'd had it. Dd1 came out with CP when ds was just 10 days' old - if I hadn't passed on my immunity he'd have had a 1 in 5 chance of dying from it. As it was he got such a mild dose you hardly have noticed, although he will probably get it again at some stage. I am so pleased that our dds have had it and won't have any future worries when they are pg or have new babies, even though it was terribly distressing.
