Question about Smear test results

My smear came back with having borderline changes, but they tested for HPV and came back negative so there is no need for another smear until 2019.

when having the smear, the nurse said if it was to come back with abnormalities I would need another smear in 6 months, yet on the letter my next one is due 2019. Which is right? The nurse or the smear letter. Just a little bit confused.

I would be inclined to follow the letter, if you have doubts confirm with your gp either over the phone or next time you need to go there.

I would check with the GP. You don't want to leave it 3 years if you should be being seen.

I had my smear in September and was told by the nurse that if no hpv present then they leave borderline changes and you carry on with 3 yearly check ups. She told me this was due to them now checking hpv.

I have had severe changes before and after 1 year I was put back onto 3 yearly checks as I was negative for hpv. This worried me as in the past I heard woman went for yearly checks however I have just had my 3 yearly check and all fine.

If your worried I would go and speak to your gp about it.

It is right. If there is no HPV, then you go back to normal screening for low grade changes.

Cervical screening checks for changes in the cells that might possibly go on to become cancer at some time in the future. Then the cells are treated and removed. For low grade changes that will probably sort themselves out, in the past, they have done 'watch and wait', or unnecessary treatment.

This HPV triage approach is actually more accurate.
