Are my children at risk?

When SIL was PG with DC1 a late scan showed an ovarian cyst on the baby. Her DC2 has just been diagnosed with the same thing.

At first GP's said it was "bad luck" as it's not genetic. Then they changed thier minds when both cycst were in exactley same place on same side and said it might be genetic.

Apparently they also told SIL that a cyst like this in a girl is operable and because they have two ovaries they can still have children. But if a similar thing happened in a boy he would be infertile. (Although how does a boy get an ovarian cyst when he has no ovaries)

SIL has recently found out that our DH's aunt had a cyst removed when she was younger and thinks the condition may now be genetic from DH mothers side.

So I our last conversation she relayed all this to me. And has now got me thinking about my DC's as I have a boy and girl.

DH thnks she's just scaremoungering (sp). Do you think it's worth a trip to the GP just in case

So did they operate on SIL's dc's.?

Also didn't know that boys could have ovarian cysts.. odd, as you say.

I wouldn't rush down to the surgery but probably a good idea to ask your GP...if only to put your mind at rest.

Boys can't have ovarian cysts because,as you say , they have no ovaries.

I imagine the doctor was really just describing the condition, rather than it was hereditary and could affect her or your boys.

Ovarian cysts are very common and even if it is hereditary in your DH family it would seem it is only affecting certain girls as you DH, his brother and their father all managed to have kids.

Both DN are under Grt Ormond St for the condition and are being reviewed for surgery (both under 5yrs).

I know about the boy thing, if a OC is hereditary how can a boy get it?
