I was diagnosed three months ago with mild periodontal disease. I went away and read up all about it from reputable websites and started taking serious steps with regard to vitamins b,c,d supplementation and oral health (water glossed twice a day, cut out sugar etc).
My dentist said today (I was in for dental check up):
"Dont bother cutting out sugar, it won't affect gum disease. It has no bearing in gum disease"
"Water flossers? You could try it, I suppose. shrug Here do you want to buy one of my interdental brushes?"
" you can't reduce size of gum pockets. Your aim now is to stop getting them worse."
And I'm not one for being all cynical about people and do not regard myself as some armchair expert in dentistry, but can't help thinking his defeatist approach of gum disease is surprising? Also, I'm focused on healing my gums and would have thought that this would involve reduction in subgingivial pocket size?
So, in a nutshell, could any dentist MNers please tell me if what he says is true?
He also sanded down the side of one of my teeth so much a year ago, that it now has a Madonna sized gap...which he's offered to fill. But he said, maybe the teeth are moving shrug, it's gone a bit splayed?!?! I know he sanded that tooth down, I remeber it being done...he was smoothing the edges.
And in a subsequent conversation where I was asking for his opinion on replacing amalgam...he suddenly decided I needed a couple of my fillings to be renewed. Is this odd?
