Vit d and ferritin help please

I had a few blood tests recently to look at thyroid, vit d, b12 etc - the typical I'm 40 and run down panel.

I finally managed to get a full breakdown today having been told all was 'normal'. Most were normal, slap bang in the middle of the ranges.

However my vit d was around 40 with a note to say whilst not deficient, some people do benefit from treatment. Similarly my iron was 40ish too and from what I could tell, it looked like I was definately close to the bottom end of that too.

Neither were a surprise tbh. I had already been supplementing iron and vit d for a few weeks before the tests so goodness knows what they'd be like if I hadn't.

Ideally I'd like to get these up a bit into optimal range, especially the iron as I have some physical symptoms I think are related. Can anyone suggest a good place to start reading up/levels of supplementation to try.

possum how strange. Do you think certain people are higher risk? I've had mine done on maternity wards supervised by nurses as my severe iron drop always happens during pregnancy. The first two times I didn't even see a doctor- the last time a trainee doctor put my line in.

There was certainly no cardiac trolley anywhere near me, I was in a bed on a large ward and certainly never saw one anywhere nearby.

Scarydinosaurs · 20/12/2016 21:36

So certain I've said it twice!

PossumInAPearTree · 20/12/2016 21:45

No, it's not a case of certain people being higher risk.

Either your hospital has a different policy or like us just don't publicise what's happening. We tuck the trolley just round the corner from the bay as putting it by the bedside would freak the person out. We don't tell them.

Not just us, if you google cosmafer guidelines there's quite a few where it talks about risks of fatal reaction andhaving resus equipment to hand.

My iron was 13 now it's up to 40 with iron tablets. GP says I'm fine now but I'm ignoring and carrying on with the iron tablets. I have a sensitive stomach but been fine. B12 is 399 but they won't give me anymore jabs. I need them though. Am so tired.

Scarydinosaurs · 20/12/2016 21:58

That's really interesting, I was never told there was a fatal risk- not that it would make a difference to me, I would take the calculated risk and have it again if I needed to.

When you can't take tablets orally, or spatone, are there any other options?

CeeBeeBee · 20/12/2016 22:24

Bracey, what iron tablets are you taking? I found out that my iron level was only 36.6 and even though they tell me it's within normal range, I know it's not enough to prevent my hair falling out.

braceybracegirl · 20/12/2016 22:26

It was hair with me too!! It's got to be 80 for hair to grow back. I will check which ones and let you know.

CeeBeeBee · 20/12/2016 23:24

Thanks Bracey.

CeeBeeBee · 21/12/2016 08:21

Thanks for that Bracey. I've just ordered a box from Amazon. How long have you been taking them for and have you managed the side effects ok? Thanks again.

braceybracegirl · 21/12/2016 08:30

My stomach has been fine and I don't have a great stomach normally. No other side effects. I've been on 3 a day for about 4 months iron levels gone from 13 to 40 ish so far.

CeeBeeBee · 21/12/2016 09:13

Thanks for that. I hope your situation improves with them.
