dd2 is a petite 19mth old and she fell down the stairs again this afternoon. she fell really badly and has a bump on her head. she cried for about 15mins, gave her some calpol for the pain. she didnt lose consciousness, hasnt vomitted, no unusual drowiness and no fluid from nose or ears.
she settled to bed fine, but woke up at a hour later and couldnt go back to sleep easily so we gave her 2.5ml of medised and milk.

she had a similar fall about 6 months ago and we did go to A&E to get her checked out. she was fine and they let us go home after an hour.

she is happily asleep now. should i be worried?? and tak her down to A&E??

Ouch your poor dd .
Yes i would take her if only for the peace of mind.

You've checked everything you are told to check when someone's hit their head AFAIK - worth looking up NHS Direct website just to be sure? Wouldn't take her to A&E unless there is something you are worried about if I were you, esp.not late on a Friday night.

Poor dd and poor you, must have been a fright.

alipiggie · 16/02/2007 22:37

I would take care. Always better to get them checked over. But that's me - had a fasttrack entry to ER with ds2.

good idea about the NHS website - i've answered no to all the questions. DH says that she seemed fine, although a little more irritable than usual probably due to tiredness.

i am still in shock. she really did fall badly, at one point her head hit one step and she flipped backwards. none of her neck actually hit a step or anything, but it all just keeps replaying in my head....

website says to encourage her to rest quietly for the next 48 hrs - no chance!! its the reason for her fall, she slipped whilst running away from me as a game...

I would also go to A&E just for peace of mind.
Ds fell down the stairs(while I was holding him)and although he seemed fine,he wasn't too good.He didn't vomit, wasn't drowsy and didn't have a bruise on his body, but did have a very bad fracture to his skull, although he was alot younger than your dd.
I'm sure she probably is fine, but I would be worrying all night if it was me.Hope she's ok.x

I wouldn't. You have done everything right as far as checking for signs of serious injury, they will only give you a leaflet of the signs to look out for. You know what you are looking for so you can do no more imo.

hunkermunker · 16/02/2007 23:34

I wouldn't take her to A&E, esp on a Friday night.

Do you have a stairgate? Your dscription of how she fell has sent chills through me! Poor you watching her tumble

quietmouse · 17/02/2007 16:45

my dd fell and fractured her skull over new year. She was drowsy, vomiting and disorineted though (and actually out cold at A & E) so all the clear signs of a head injury.

I would probably take her if it were me but I am always over cautious! as if there is a bleed on the brain the effect is not always immediate.

The advice on got on leaving the hospital with dd was to wake her every few hours through the night and to monitor her closely for a while (which of course I did!)

autumnlover · 17/02/2007 21:42

just an update - didnt take dd2 to the A&E afterall. have been monitoring closely and although she is more irritable than usual, she does seem fine.

poor girl does have one hell of a bump!!!

thank you so so much for all your advice and reassurances. i think she is fine but might take her to doctors on monday just for peace of mind ...

Perhaps take her, or call gp tomorrow, if still irritable, just to see what they think!!
