my son was diagnosed with an umbilical hernia a couple of weeks ago and now we have had the results back from the hospital and they are going to operate on it to repair it

does anyone know what happens as it will be a couple of weeks before they send us a letter out

i have a 16 mth dd and will have to arrange childcare for when he's in and want to know how long he will have to stay in for and if he will be in any pain and recovery time etc

feel really bad for him he'd only 5 and it's not bothering him at all at the moment!!

Hello - my DD is 5 and has had one known about since birth. It is situated next to her tummy button but the button itself often goes hard as a stone and blue. However, we've had it checked out by 2 different paediatric docs who both said it would be fine to leave and that the only possible reason for her to have an op would be for aesthetic reasons and that there is no strangulation risk (although that surprised as it does go bright blue). I'm sure they said that the op is very minor and there is only a tiny cut that clears up and is hardly visible and it's relativiely painless. I'm sure that we'll have it done in the end but as it's so simple an op, I'd go for it and then not have to worry about it later (as we have been for the last 5 years!!!)

thanks a lot, don't know much about this but fro what i had found out on google it seemed that they would just leave it

i suppose though that if it saves any complications in the long run it's prob best
