COLD SORE - Owww

foxinsocks · 17/06/2004 20:19

Well, never in my life have I had one of these then suddenly it appeared about 3 days ago. It is AGONY! It's right in the corner of my mouth so everytime I open or close my mouth it feels as though I am cracking open a scab (excuse the graphic detail).

Anyway, because I have never had one I missed all the 'signs' - the tingling skin etc so I missed the optimal time to Zovirax it apparently.

Is there ANYTHING else, especially homeopathic, that could help me (and help not get one again). And what do you do if you get them? Am I going to get them all the time now?

I thank you.

Me too, dd bashed my lip into a tooth and I was up at 2am last night crying as my lip had swollen up to mad proportions it was burnign and I had been Zoviraxing madly!
Tea tree oil mixed with cooled boiled water, on cotton pad
AMAZING instant relief...
Do it!

hi, me again

Bioforce do Propolis gel which will cut the length of the cold core in half. use as soon as feel tingle or as soon as it appears. seems to be quite good.

Echinacea will boost your immune system (they only appear when immune is low) and it is anti-viral(cold sore is a virus)

take lysine. it is an amino acid which will deprive the virus of its food source. can take it all the time as a preventative, or now to get rid of it quicker.

forgot to mention tea tree, can dab it on neat ( 1 drop only)..make sure it is 100% pure essential oil.

Chinchilla · 17/06/2004 20:28

Foxinsocks - Are you sure that it is a cold sore? If you have never had one before, how did you get the virus...or is that too personal? Sorry. Anyway, the reason I ask is because you say that the corner of your mouth, so could it just be dry skin that has got out of hand? I have had this before, and I don't ever suffer from cold sores. Just a thought.

foxinsocks · 17/06/2004 20:41

thanks everyone! I've got some tea tree to hand so will use that now and off to health shop for the rest and the hayfever stuff.

chinchilla - it is unfortunately as dh gets a very strange form of the herpes simplex virus (the one that causes cold sore) in his eczema - it comes out like giant boils on the skin where his eczema is, I think its called eczema herpeticum. It's quite serious but he has it well under control. Anyway, he is supposed to tell me when he has it so that we don't kiss etc. and he forgot that he had an infected patch on his scalp and bob's your uncle, a week later there's my cold sore gggrrr!!

Sorry fox - hope you manage to sort it our

ChicPea · 18/06/2004 04:14

Yes like Chinchilla I wondered if you had a coldsore. There is a fungal/bacterial infection called angular carlitus (sp?) and it appears in one or both corners of mouth usually when run down. I got this during and after having braces on teeth as with these you tend to dribble more! Also, people with dentures can suffer from this.

carla · 18/06/2004 04:25

Hmmm. 'Queen of bossy Hearts' mode ... and why are you alll still up? Hmmmm ?

carla · 18/06/2004 04:38

God, hope that made sense

carla · 18/06/2004 05:25

Foxy, meant to say I could NOT kiss my dh's scalp. Sorry if I confused you

ChicPea · 18/06/2004 05:55

Carla - are you a) calling me bossy?! b) asking me why I am still up?

foxinsocks · 18/06/2004 08:15

carla! I didn't kiss his scalp (quite frankly, I wouldn't want ) but we had sex and snogged and I got it from the kissing

we are off to hosp this morning to see dd's paediatrician so I'll grin at him and hopefully he'll confirm what it is! Thanks again for the advice - the tea tree has certainly taken the sting out of its tail and I will look for that cream today.

We use St Johns wort and Calandula tincture on them. Both herbs are good for healing the skin.

alibo · 22/06/2004 12:32

I get cold sores(touch wood not had one for ages, and have to get VECTAVIR from doctors to heal it, as Zovirax good for preventing but not so good I've found for getting rid of them. There are some anti-viral tablets you can get from gp, but they will only give them in special circumstances as VERY expensive; cannot remember name of them. My gp gave me a two week course before I got married and for honeymoon in hot climate, to prevent me getting one. Anyway despite soaring pre wedding stress levels and honeymoon in strong sun, did not get one.(This is when I usually get them). HTH!!
