Disinfecting a kitchen

I've had norovirus which I've passed onto my DH, tonight he has managed to throw up in the middle of the kitchen. How do I disinfect everything? Should I just use neat dettol? Annoyingly I had washing hanging up in the room as well, can I wash them with dettol too? Is it safe to wash plates in?

Hate this virus Angry

Oh man, I sympathise! Norovirus is horrible, hope you all feel better really soon.

I'd use bleach over Dettol, and put the washing on a hot cycle (ditto for any bedding you've used while you've been ill). If you have a dishwasher, chuck as much as you can in there on a hot wash. Milton liquid/fizzy tablets is also really good for killing germs and sterilising stuff.

Forgot to say, if you don't have a dishwasher just wash everything up in really hot soapy water. I wouldn't use Dettol for that but it might be ok?

Ugh my DH did the same bloody thing with noro two weeks ago - puked in the kitchen sink Hmm.

I dettolled everything straight away and bleached the sink. I threw away wooden chopping boards and tea towels / dish clothes / scrubbing brushes in vicinity of sink.

I still caught it. Sorry.

Ooh Milton good idea, we don't have a dishwasher (ooh how I wished we had one right now!)

Oh I see you already had it...are there many others in house who are still at risk?

kerryob · 02/12/2016 21:17

I've passed onto to him Blush

chlorine bleach kills the Norovirus.

kerryob · 02/12/2016 21:46

Is there a way to,disinfect clothes?

For the plates, you could put them in sink and then pour over water from just boiled kettle.

Baylisiana · 02/12/2016 21:48

Clothes, there is a dettol laundry cleanser you can put in the final rinse. Don't know if it really does anything but it claims to. Wash at as high a temp as possible. If oen or two items are worst you could soak them in a bucket with more concentrated solution of the laundry cleanser.

You need to wash clothes on the highest setting possible....bit of a problem with modern textiles!

nennyrainbow · 02/12/2016 23:02

I don't think Dettol works against norovirus and you may just end up spreading it around more. Bleach or high temperature washing are best. It's also highly airborne - you can get it by being near someone when they vomit.

Baylisiana · 02/12/2016 23:29

How long can it live on things? If you have both already had it and avoid others visiting for a few days then maybe cleaning and general sanitising would do rather than having to kill it all? Just wondering.

pimmsy · 03/12/2016 00:25

And chuck your toothbrushes!

Good luck.
