Breast lump question

whateveryousay · 02/12/2016 20:06

I am trying not to panic, but not doing very well.
I found a large, long, hard lump in my breast last week, gp has referred me to consultant, who I am seeing on Monday. I can't stop googling, and scaring myself in the meanwhile though, so I'm looking for some reassurance please.
The lump is long, about 3-4cm, and hard. It doesn't move, and it's not smooth.
If anyone has had similar, with a good outcome, please let me know. Thank you.
I'm 45, with 4 kids.

Hi, didn't want to read and run. I'm sure someone will be along soon to have words of wisdom but in the mean time hugs and Flowers x

Hi. Sorry to hear you're in this situation. I've been in your situation several times now. Each time it is very scary. I always google when I shouldn't and then I always come on here for reassurance and handholding. ive been reassured on here (sorry I don't have the statistics to hand) that the majority of breast lumps are not cancerous. Mine have all been thick tissue. It's a horrible time but try to stay away from google- it only throws up worst cases and causes more worry. The lump could be caused by so many things. As far as the lump itself. I've certainly had a long 3-4cm one which didn't seem to move and felt grape like. And I've also had a more irregular one. As I say both were non-cancerous. Sorry that's not much help. Wishing you lots of luck.

Thank you so much for replying, both of you.

Zippyswife, that is very reassuring. I am now telling myself that that is what I have, until I hear otherwise.

I'll have a better idea in less than 24hrs now anyway (the waiting is awful!) as my appointment is tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks again.

Good luck Smile xx

Best of luck Flowers

My mum's just had a lump removed. She was told all lumps feel bigger and more scary as it's normal tissue growing as it should around anything such as cysts/fatty lumps etc. And yes, majority non cancerous.

whateveryousay · 05/12/2016 06:39

Thank you.
Hope your mum is making a good recovery.

Great news! Yes blocked ducts is what I've had with at least one of my lumps. Massive relief. Sleep

zippyswife · 05/12/2016 20:48

Did you get a gp appointment head?

Headofthehive55 · 05/12/2016 21:47

Tomorrow. Glad it's good news for you what

zippyswife · 06/12/2016 18:59

How did you get on today head? Flowers

Headofthehive55 · 06/12/2016 20:00

I have been referred to the hospital.

zippyswife · 06/12/2016 20:12

Thinking of you.

whateveryousay · 06/12/2016 22:14

I'm thinking of you too, Head. Let us know how you get on. The waiting is horrid Flowers

The wait is horrid. As I say I've had this several times now and it is always as horrid. Try to focus on the fact that the vast majority of lumps are non cancerous.

Headofthehive55 · 07/12/2016 06:57

Thank you. Apparently I should be seen within the week. Feels like a lifetime. I just keep thinking the worst. It helps to hear positive outcomes.

zippyswife · 07/12/2016 15:55

Have you been through this before? Do you know what to expect? From experience they have a clinical assessment (a feel of the lump) then a mammogram then ultrasound is standard. Then sometimes (I've had this twice out of say 5-6 times) they do a biopsy if they need further assessment. You should get a very good idea on the day what it is. Even when I've had biopsies they've told me that they were only doing it to rule out anything sinister. From experience the whole thing seems to take 2-3 hours. The wait is awful but hang in there. Keeping fingers crossed for you.

Headofthehive55 · 07/12/2016 18:12

Oh I'm glad they do it all on one day. No I've not done this before! Thank you.

zippyswife · 07/12/2016 19:59

At least that's what I've always had (at various hospitals in different trusts- south east).

FrancesNiadova · 07/12/2016 20:07

Hi Headofthehive there is a wonderful website,
Breastcancercare.co.uk
There is a forum for people who are, "in the waiting room," and worried.
You can also phone this number
0808 800 6000
And talk directly with a breast care nurse.
If you post on their forum, you will get an online answer from one of the breast nurses. Also, everyone is in the same boat with information to share.
I hope all's OK, most lumps are benign, but you're doing exactly the right thing in getting it checked out.
