ds1 is limping- what do I do?

Started limping tonight- no idea why. When I asked him where it hurt he pointed to his knee. He has a big bruise on his chest from falling onto a bike, but did that this morning and I haven't noticed him limping until this evening. He has been jumping off his playhouse roof all day, but again I didn't notice him hurt himself at all.

Am I right in thinking that as he's bearing some weight (or is he- it's all tiptoes on that leg), and isn't howling it's OK to leave? He's practically unexaminable. I'd say is definitely un-x-rayable, and would struggle with a casualty length wait. On the other hand it can be very difficult to tell how badly he's hurt himself. It's obviously hurting him as he doesn't put things on.

oh gd he'll go crazy if its itchy and he can't get to it! No way to explain to him either. Extra fast healing vibes please.

If it has to be splinted then the aircast boot or back slab secured with bandages plus plaster boot (a big vecro sandal) as suggested by Tissy are probably going to be your best bet.

God what a nightmare...healing vibes definately being sent your way.

Oh thanks for all this advice- really helpful. I guess they were talking about the fibreglass one that tissy mentioned today. I think because they're not expecting him to stay still with whatever he's given and that is the strongest.

I'll certainly ask about other options if we go back though. If splints could be welll secured they would seem to be the best bet.

Fibreglass is def. the strongest, but if you have to go back it's probably worth trying the other (removable) options first.

Good luck!

Got to go to bed now- but thank you- think of me somewhere between 2am and 5am as ds1 bounces (I hope) limps (please no) into my bedroom!

I hope he bounces and I hope it's 5 (I hope it's 9, but I guess that's unrealistic).

Jimjams, sorry I didnt see this before. If there is a fracture or they want to immobilise it anyway, ask for softcast. Even if reinforced with a resin backslab, it can be unwound, as well as cut with scissors. Derriford plaster room have this (or did - i broke my ankle a year and a half ago, and saw a girl getting a softcast removed while I was having my cast put on)

If they really struggle, get them to call cdc therapy dept as we've got some. Im there tomorrow.

Hope it doesnt come to that tho, and it all settles down. it could just be a nasty soft tissue injury that isnt getting a chance to rest.

Thanks Fubsy. He still hobbling this morning and its still swollen, although less so I think. He's back to his normal 5am, so may be feeling better. He's limped onto the school bus so I'll see how he gets on. Will he smash a softcast to pieces trying to run around with it?

Actually there's a OT in the cdc who knows him quite well, and what he's like. It was when he was seeing her that he started refusing to go into the CDC- first name begins with B. She used to have to come and see us at home as we couldn't get him through the front doors. She got married a couple of years ago. She's very nice.

Hmm there are a few of us around aren't there- we'll need to do a meet-up sometime
