Exercise and breathing issues

I recently started running and after every run I feel like I struggle to get enough breath in and I cough a lot for the rest of the day.
I started running in the summer and it's been happening since then but as the weather is getting colder it's getting worse and really putting me off going out.
It's now happening with any exercise and DH thinks I should speak to my GP/nurse but is it a waste of time?

If you are struggling to breath then you need to talk to a doctor.

My guess would be undiagnosed asthma; cold air provokes the air passages so exercise in the cold can be difficult. I am asthmatic and running in the cold can make me feel breathless and does make me cough, although I bounce back quickly afterwards.

Whether it's a waste of time depends on your surgery, my local surgery is excellent and always willing to talk to me about exercise/fitness issues that aren't stopping day to day life but are getting in the way of exercise - not sure all surgeries are unfortunately...

I'd go and get checked.

Saying that I'm finding the change to cold air hard when running, I also struggle with pollen and humidity in the spring/summer.

I find breathing in for 3 footfalls and out for 3 helps regulate my breathing. Some people prefer in for 4 out for 2. It takes a bit but you should find something that works for you. In addition try to keep tall, shoulders back and chest high, it feels odd at first but it really helps with breathing while running

Thank you both for replying, I do try to control my breathing as sometimes I feel like I'm breathing far too hard and I try to breath from my diaphragm rather than shallow breaths.
I'm very concious of my running posture too as I've got a dodgy shoulder which plays up if I slouch over-that's not to say it doesn't happen though so it's something I try to keep correcting and my physio give me grief if I don't stick to it!
I'll see if I can get an appointment to talk it over.
