She has just gone to a&e.

She was having severe stomach ache and she hadn't been to the toilet in 5 days so she went to the gp who could feel a mass in her stomach and wanted her to go to hospital. She didn't want to so the gp said she would reffer her for a scan and gave her some laxitives which worked but today she has been passing alot of blood in her stools so i have sent her up to the hospital.

She's terrified she as got cancer and now im scared to.

If she hasn't been to the toilet for a while and the laxatives worked quickly she may have had a tear.

Can you ring the hospital and see what is happening.

Is there anyone with her.

Try not be to scared. (easier said than done I know)

lulumama · 15/02/2007 19:44

well, there are at least two conditions i know of that cause blood in the stools...Ulcerative colitis and crohns disease, which are treatable

also, if she has not been to the loo, she might well have piles from being constipated and straining and therfore producing blood

good she has gone to docs, hope she gets good news.

Charleesunnysunsun · 15/02/2007 19:46

She is by herself up the hospital but i have been on the phnoe to her all evening reasuring her.
I wanted to go with her but kids are in bed and we have no sitter.

I think if it were just the blood she would feel better but the dr felt a big mass in her stomach so she is worried.

I'm sorry to be gross, but do you know if it was fresh bright red blood? If so it is much more likely to be from a tear than a tumour. I can see why you're worried though- I do hope she gets some good news.

Heavenis · 15/02/2007 19:52

Ask the hospital what time they do the ward rounds. Then you can phone and ask what they have said.

Do you have anyone who can look after the children why you go and visit.

chocolatekimmy · 15/02/2007 20:32

I hope she doesn't have cancer and that its something easily treatable

however

she either does or she doesn't, you can't change that right now so she must get a proper diagnosis - its the only way she will know and the sooner the better so treatment (for whatever it is) can start.

All the best, you sound very supportive and caring

Charleesunnysunsun · 15/02/2007 20:38

I will visit tomorrow.

I have just spoken to her and the dr's are disscussing it but they haven't told her anything.

I'm not sure what type of blood it was but apprently alot and actually in the poo rather than when it was wiped (sorry tmi!)

Im keeping my fingers crossed.
will keep you updated.

keeping my fingers crossed for you and your mum. xxx

charlee, my mum had a very similar thing this time last year, in the end she hadnt been to the toilet for near 7 weeks. She couldnt get out of bed and was really very ill.

The doctor had tried giving her laxatives but they hadnt worked and the doctor told her the more she worried about going the more she wouldnt be able to go. It got to the stage where she was refered for a barium anema, before she managed to have that done, she got up one saturday morning to find that she had quite bad discharge and also bleeding. My dad rushed her to the nearest emergency medical centre and they told him to get her to the hospital asap.

Once there they gave her an ordinary anema which seemed to help. The let her home after a week. She has had to have test after test after test to try and find what the problem was, but even now a year later, we are still none the wiser as to what caused it.

She still has problems now where she cant go, and trys not to get too upset by it, you can hear it in her voice when she is bad, she is very out of breath, and she also has problems standing for too long. And yes I did expect a phone call saying she had cancer, even now i think i half expect them to find something.

Fingers crossed that all will be ok.

Any news on you mum today ?

Heavenis · 16/02/2007 18:07

.

Charleesunnysunsun · 16/02/2007 19:53

Thanks for all your lovley messages!

She is back at home now and the good news is that she doesn;t have anything to bad!

What they think has happened is she has had a backlog of poo (sorry again tmi!) that has caused a big tear in her small intestine causing the bleeding and pain and the mass was back up poo that had been forced back up her abdomen.

She is resting at home, thank god she's ok.

Sorry to here your mum was so poorly wurly wurly.
