Ds has been at the hospital since 6.30 this morning and has just been taken down for his op which'll hopefully only take an hour.I'm stuck at home with a really bad case of the flu,and am feeling rather helpless being 7 months pg,but just wondered has anyone's little boy had the same op and if so,how long was it before they were back to their normal self?

Tia.

Oh poor you! My dt1 had a hernia op, not the same thing, but I would have felt so bad if I couldn't be there with him. He was absalutely fine though, so try not to worry

How old is your DS? Mine had it at 3.10. Was totally fine. Woke up from anaesthetic and polished off a huge bowl of cocopops and a 7-up. Took him home about 4 hours later. Advised to keep him topped up with Calpol and Nurofen so that he didn;t have any pain. Did this on day 1 but was fine by day 2.

My ds had this op. I was there. All fine. As the nurses said shortly after waking up he was getting out of the bed and wanting to play we had to guide him a bit at first, as they said he would be unsteady on his feet and he was but he didn't notice with us to help. It was so good to see him just get up and play as if nothing had happened to him. As for the weeks after, I don't remember much except it was not a problem washing him etc and he had no pain whatsoever. Hope that helps. Years later, he knows nothing, has no evidence of the op either. We may remember to tell him in years to come but wouldn't bother now. (One thing, when they opened him up they found the testes were where they should be! However they stitched them in place to make sure they didn't move up again.)

My DH had to have this when he was about 8 - they waited longer in those days! MIL says he was fine pretty much straight away. Am sure he will be fine bless him!

Hi bubbaloo, ds had this operation when he was 9 months. The operatioon lasted 1 hour and when he came out he was still asleep. He was kept in the hospital for another night (he had his op in italy). He was a bit grumpy after waking up. But the next day he was back to his normal self.

Thanks everyone-that's very reassuring.
Ds is 20 months old.Just waiting for either Dh or my mum to phone to say he's out and ok.It did say in the leaflet they sent that all being well, they will keep him in for 2 hours post op(to keep an eye on him),then he should hopefully be discharged. They also said that that he won't be able to go on any of his ride on toys for a whole month,so I've just hidden them upstairs which I felt a bit mean about.

Oh yes, Bubbaloo, we weren't told about riding toys etc but we did keep him off nursery for a week or so just to make sure no unnecessary injury occurred. Our ds was just 3 years old at the time. It was found through a development check. He was allowed home after a couple of hours and had calpol for a couple of days just to be safe.

Well...he came home about 1pm and was very sore, tired and a bit grumpy,so went straight to bed.The surgeon said the operation went well and Dh has just woken him up and is changing his nappy as I'm a bit squeamish, and so far he doesn't seem too bad.
Going to give him some painkillers and try him with a nice beef casserole-he must be starving.

My DS had this a few months ago - he is 7. He recovered very quickly - a few days of soreness and walking like he'd been in the saddle for a few days but he was back at school a week later.

Bubbaloo · 15/02/2007 18:26

He has now polished off a large bowl of beef casserole,a yoghurt,a banana and a few raisins and is running about like a lunatic, chasing the cats.
