Tummy upsets in babies - is there any point in going to the docs?

dd3 has had a bad stomach since Saturday - VILE smelly loose nappies, was sick a lot. She is eating now but everything just literally goes straight through - half an hour after eating it all comes out again. Her breath smells too

Do you know, I don't think any of mine have had a tummy upset before - not this bad anyway.

What do you do? Still give her bottles and some food?

My v good GP told me to stop the milk until the nappies were solid and do the whole BRAT diet. Twas the only thing that worked for me when DS was 8 months old and had 2 weeks of it

Hi Enid

My DS had a bad bout of gastro-entritus over Christmas - he was sick after every feed for a couple of days and then the diaorrhea started - gross!!

We took him to the out-of-hours GP on christmas eve who prescribed some rehydration powders (which ds wouldn't drink) - he still had diaorrhea (but not vomiting) after 5 days later so we took him back and the doctor said that there was nothing he could do - just had to run it's course - which it did after about another few days.

the first doctor advised to carry on feeding him (he was just on milk at that stage) even though it did seem to come straight through within the hour

sorry - am rambling but i guess what i am trying to say is that the doctors really didn't do much - I think the important thing is to keep them hydrated as much as possible and let it run it's course

HTH

Ds (12 mo) had this recently and the advice was to continue to feed, but give starchy food with no fat content. When he wasn't interested, they then recommended making up his formula half strength. When he still didn't improve, they recommended just dioralyte.

The doctor said that the lining gets stripped from the bowel when they have diarrhoea (sp?) so they are unable to cope with any fat in their diet. She said the main thing was to reduce the fat content as far as possible and ensure he had plenty of water. HTH.
