DICLOFENAC - How long should it take to feel the benefit.

I was prescribed this yesterday for a possible hip bursitis, to try before a steroid jab.

My only concern is that I start a brand new job in 2 weeks & don't want to arrive on day one unable to stand up!

How long do I give it before taking the needle? Anyone taking this at the moment?

Thanks

I find it normally does something within 24 hours. I'm not on it right now, but have taken it before.

Thanks - here's hoping! Had trouble getting out of bed this morning. I'm ok standing but seize up if sitting/lying.

Is physio an option? I know sod all about bursitis.

NotQuiteCockney · 14/02/2007 10:46

This page recommends physio.

I should look out some old excercises, I have had this before. My hips have had several operations so are prone to problems but nothing like this for nearly 2 years - so really well timed for a new job!

I found 24-48 hrs but it's affects wore off over time. Had the injection into muscle 2 weeks ago and it's had no effect but am being given another today directly in to the joint which may be more effective. Hope you get some relief soon.

Trying to remember my pharmacology...I think the pain relieving effect can start after 20mins, but you have to take NSAID's regularly for at least 3 days (might be 5) for the actual anti-inflammatory effects to kick in. It's absolutley worth finishing the course you've been prescribed and avoiding activities you know will stir up the pain for a couple of weeks to see if that sorts it.

Hip bursitis (as in NQC's) link can be helped with physio. I would always recommend a physio assessment before you get a GP sticking a steroid injection in....but maybe that's because I'm a physio!!!

It can take up to 3 months before the anti-inflammatory effect is maximal, so keep going. You probably will notice an improvement in 2 weeks, though.

Milliways · 15/02/2007 13:49

Thanks everyone. Noticed a marked improvement this morning already

There are two actions. the first is pan relief which should kick in over the first day.

the second is anti-inflamatory action, and this will take a little longer

Just noticed your post - Dyclofenac is fantastic an definatle gets to the pain - but I'm sure you have noticed the lightly scary list of side effects - one owrd of advice - always eat (and over eat) before taking it! Its a fast track to ulcers and stomach problems, could feel stomach attacking itself when I was on it for upper joint pain over a couple of months. Sorry to sound negative and hope it gets to your hip in the short term, and that you can start your job without pain.
