I am goin to the dentist tomorrow and I have REALLY sensitive teeth.

It hurts if I have hot or cold stuff - sometimes if I breathe in too hard on a cold day!!

I know I have a quite high pain threshold on account of having given birth twice and being OK.

Problem is it REALLY hurts when my teeth are cleaned with the whizzy thing to the point of sweating and squirming......will the dentist think I am a wuss if I ask for help with the pain and if I do is there anything they can give me anyway....

I am already sared and the appointment is not until 9.30 tomorrow. Also kids are avib=ng check up at the same time time so I do not ant to spoil their positive dentisr experiences....heyyulpp

can you ask to speakto him on phone beforehand?

do the kids wait in the room with you? this couldbe tricky.

if not i would say " look it hurts - pain relief or go shove it mate - jesus love i gave birth twice - its not cos im a wuss you pass a melon through yer anus and tell me different, its cos i have sensitive teeth"

or " i have sensitive teeth i dont like wizzy thing!"

Custardo, your posts always crack me up!!!. You have made me laugh in my hour of need- thank you so much fir that...
Children will be in the room with me whilst I am having my check up- stupid, I know but it's just the way it has worked out what with half term and me teaching and we have just always done it that way.
I have written your sentence down and I will say it word for word. Thank you.

I just didn't know if dentists were prepared to give pain relief for just bloody cleaning your teeth!!

It would be difficult for the dentist to numb you to clean your teeth, as your whole mouth would be numb & this isn't a great idea.

He might be able to do it in 2/3 visits, but if you are on the NHS, he may not have the funds to do this. If you are private, it could be costly.

I would ask him/her to clean your teeth without using the 'whizzy thing' do you mean the actual ultrasonic cleaner (which uses water to help remove plaque & vibrates), or the toothbrush used at the end?

Either way, it can be avoided. He can remove plaque/calculus with a non whizzy thing & just not polish your teeth afterwards.

sandcastles · 12/02/2007 21:15

Oh & have your tried using Sensodyne or an equivilent?

As well as using it as a normal toothpaste rub it on your teeth at night.

spudmasher · 12/02/2007 21:18

Thank you sandcastles!! He uses the ulra thingy first then the toothbrush thingy. So

I will ask him to hold back on the toothbrush.

It all hurts to be honest but less is better.

Would a nurofen or paracetamol help before I go (or half a bottle of gin??)

You're welcome.

I'd avoid the gin, lol.

You can take either the paracetamol or Nurofen before you go, it might help a bit.

The toothbrush part can be avoided, (afterall you can just go home & do it) Just have a good rinse afterwards.

The ultrasonic to clean is great as it gets all the bits out/off, so if you CAN cope a little, that would be good.

Let him know you have sens teeth, he may be able to suggest something (can sometimes coat the area nearest the gum, but not in all cases) and may give you samples of Sensodyne.

Good Luck

spudmasher · 12/02/2007 21:28

Thank you Sandcastles.
I feel a bit more able to cope now.
I will take the nurofen.
I will ask him not to brush.
I will tell him hoe I feel because up until now I have just kept quiet and shaken and sweated all the way through.
I will revise breathing techniques...
I would rather give birth!!

Please do tell him. The amount of times people never told us & we could have helped more if we had known.

I am sure you will be OK. If it gets too much, tell him you will put your hand up for a break.

spudmasher · 12/02/2007 21:46

Can you do it for me?? {Spud quivers}

As a dentist my advice is (and apologies if this is repeating but I haven't read the other posts)

  1. Ask to have them cleaned manually (ie without the ultra sonic, just using hand tools and then a polish).
  1. Start using a mouthwash for sensitive teath and for any particular teeth that are extremely sensitive smear sensodyne toothpaste over the tooth after cleaning at night (then don't eat or drink). That way it acts more effectively. This will take a week or 2 before you notice any improvement.
spudmasher · 12/02/2007 21:57

Thanks ComeOVeneer. Now I see the significance of your name!!
Very good! Verygood!!
