So I finally persuaded dp to go to gp's about itchy mole...

for my dp to be in there for literally 2 minutes and to be told its nothing to worry about. My dp has had a mole on his arm that literally wakes him up it itches so badly, for about three weeks now. The skin around it has become raised and inflammed which makes it quite difficult to see the mole itself which is a very small one.
Anyway having googled it (yes i know) everything I read suggested it must be removed for a biopsy as it is a sign of skin cancer and it is difficult to dx without a biopsy. Dp really didn't want to go to dr's 'its only a small mole, I'm going to look stupid, blah, blah'. So I have next to no chance of getting him to return but i am really not satisfied with the gp's response. My dp said he didn't really look at it, just saw the riased area and told him to put hand cream on it . My dp has never had any type of skin inflammation or ezcma so this in itself is unusual. Should i make him go back, does this sopund right to you?

There's somewhere called The London Mole Clinic who will check them I think, hang on

WideWebWitch · 12/02/2007 17:36

here

cece · 12/02/2007 17:37

I would go back with him and see one of the other docs maybe.

My fil was like this when he first started having trouble walking. In the end mil took him and insisted somehing was wrong. Turned out he had Parkinsons

Better safe than sorry I say.

Carmenere · 12/02/2007 17:38

I would go back, go in with him and say you are very concerned and that you want it removed.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 12/02/2007 17:38

Put hand cream on it - bloody hopeless!.

I would seek a second opinion from another doctor in the practice.

Hopefully it is nothing to worry about but moles that itch, that change suddenly as his has done or are inflammed should be seen by a specialist. I would therefore insist that he is referred to such a specialist asap. Better to be safe than sorry in my view.

wow thats a very helpful link www, we are very skintos though atm, would he be able to get it done on his medical insurance or would he have to go through crappy GP for that?

Cece sorry to hear about your FIL that is dreadful.
I just feel so frustrated, dp hasn't been to gp's for years , it took one hell of alot of persuading, now he thinks I overreacted.

It sounds like the kind of thing med insurance might pay for but no idea, check your policy.

PrettyCandles · 12/02/2007 17:48

Insurance would insist on a referal from a GP.

Definitely get a second opinion from another GP in the practice - moles are nothing to be trifled with.

tubismybub · 12/02/2007 17:48

Definately go back, my friend had a very similar experience with her mole and her GP took it very seriously. Turned out to be a small infectin under the skin but she still needed anti biotics to clear it up.

Great link WWW, would be money extremely well spent IMO. But then I'm obsessive about moles

saffy202 · 12/02/2007 18:31

Our local hospital has a mole clinic one afternoon a week. You do need to be referred by your gp though.

morocco · 12/02/2007 18:37

it's very cheap and easy for your gp to refer to dermatology or even remove it themselves if they do minor surgery but if it is skin cancer and it's left on, you will be really really regretting not having acted sooner so don't let the gp fob you off. my mum kept going about one on her arm, for over a year, and when it was eventually removed it was a melanoma. luckily it had not spread to the lymph glands anyway but if it had, we would have been very bitter about the delay when it's such an easy and minor surgery to carry out in the early stages

I'd get him to go back. I've had a mole on my leg for as long as I can remember, anyhow after I has ds in 2005 it seemed to change colour. I left it and went to see the doctor about something else last November and dh told me to mention it (after me wittering about it changing colour and shape). The doctor referred me to a specialist, who I saw within 2 weeks and he decided to remove it. It turned out to be non cancerous but like another poster has said better to be safe than sorry.

thanks for your replies have had a go slow computer over the last couple of days so couldn't come on and check. Am trying to get dp to make an appointment with another gp but he thinks i'm just going OTT, this is what really pees me off.
