ARE YOU DUE A SMEAR?

me23 · 12/02/2007 11:48

I've just been to the doctors and had my smear test done, it was my first one. It took less 3 minutes and was totally painfree!

much easier if you've had a baby I reckon.

Please everyone make sure you have yours done, don't be scared it really isnt nothing to worry about. It was a breeze probably thanks to my stretched fanjo

your post made me laugh. I am due one and keep getting reminder letters but I really don't want to go. Yes, I know its silly but I will make the appointment this week - promise!!

mateychops · 12/02/2007 12:11

I've got mine booked for my next day off. Followed by an appt for an eyebrow re-shape. Need to remember which one I get the knees up, Mother Brown.

burstingbug · 12/02/2007 12:13

I had one done a week ago, not had one since 2001 before that! My results are going to take up to 1 month to come back!

PeachyClairColouredRoses · 12/02/2007 12:19

Overdue a year but you annot take kids so I cannot go Dh pays lip service to the oh you must go thing, but always fills my time up with scheduled things (eg, despearte to do assignment this PM- he wants me to go out with him shopping)

Nip · 12/02/2007 12:21

me23 - thanks i need to get one booked still so will get back onto them to sort it.

me23 · 12/02/2007 12:22

oh good you're all making your appointments, The doc said My results could take 8 weeks

I thought results wouldnt take more than 10 days! oh well, she also said that it is quite common to have an abnormal smear and that if yOu do they will repeat the smear in 6 months.

oh no peachy! my doctor said I could bring dd, could you ask them to make an exception?

or rather TELL dh this is your health, and youre leaving kids with him for 30 mins!

saralou100 · 12/02/2007 12:27

peachyclair - take the kids, let them play with all the medical stuff in the room and have a simple yet potentially life saving procedure done!

or let dh take the kids shopping, you can spend 20 mins at the dr's leaving the rest of the afternoon to do your assigment

Hallgerda · 12/02/2007 12:30

I went recently, after a nine-year break . They now use a disposable plastic gadget rather than the nasty cold metal one - I hope that may help any waverers out there to pluck up the courage to do what they know they should!

PeachyClairColouredRoses · 12/02/2007 12:34

fab idea however 2 of my 3 are ASd and couldnt come without me basically holding onto them, and cant go out with only one adult and we dont have backup

This isnt a first for us; been several times when we've had to let things go- I even had to deal with a broken bone (only toe) as couldn't tkae ds's to A&E and Dh was away for work. Its just the way it is.

saralou100 · 12/02/2007 12:47

sorry peachy... that was a little thoughtless of me

please though... schedule your dh to give you a little time for this (and your assignment)

i'm a gynae nurse... prevention is far better than cure in this case (and less time consuming)

LunarSea · 12/02/2007 13:39

Yes - but as am currently pg it'll need to wait until this one has arrived!

Twiglett · 12/02/2007 13:43

feckin' hospital just scared me silly

I had my smear 2 weeks ago .. last year I had a loop diathermy under general because of a faulty smear

so hospital wrote to me .. I opened it saw the word smear and nearly collapsed .. of course they were writing to tell me it was all clear but I must have a repeat in 6 months

go go go

Peachy I haven't forgotten that thing and have been nagging DH to do it .. hopefully this week

I am on a yearly smear since 2001 after having had loop diathermy too. (pre-cancerous cells in the cervix). DO go, don't be scared, it could save your life and express your anxiety to the nurse. You'll be fine

daisycat01 · 12/02/2007 14:50

My friend has just found out she has cancer of the cervix, her consulatant has said that 75% of her cervix has cancer cells on it and that this would have taken 8 years to develop. She is 26. She had her last smear 4 years ago and it didnt come back abnormal. Her consultant said that many abnormal smears are not followed up due to the patient not being in a risk bracket, or due to the high amount of poorly taken smears when not enough cells are taken, it also costs the NHS to follow up an abnormal smear.
In the future I am going to go private and pay £65 so that my smear test is properly anaylsed. I am also never, ever going to miss a smear, in fact I may even go as far to have one a year, its a 5 minute process that can easily save you a hell of a lot of problems.

Hallgerda · 12/02/2007 14:53

Sally, all the family planning clinics round here do smear tests - I don't know about your area, obviously, but it would be a perfectly reasonable question to ask.

fredip71 · 12/02/2007 15:00

Daisycat, I am sorry to hear about your friend. You are right to go private as you can't seem to rely on the nhs these days. Mine was a CIN 2 (jargon), CIN 3 is cancer and I had colposcopy after colposcopy. I am a bit worried at the mo because I've had irregular bleeding for the past 2 months or so and it started again on Friday when I was due for my smear. Here (Nottingham), it takes between 4-6 weeks. All the best

Can I ask you a few questions? Just started a thread about fertility and the op my friend is going to have...

Nip · 12/02/2007 15:19

sallyheartshapedstrawberry - i also cannot go to my GP - i know the GP's far too well (and the nurse) so i've been trying to get into a Family planning clinic - but without luck! It's taken me ages and i'm pretty sure i have now found somewhere.

It's horrible for me, i have always been petrified of going and with the added worry of the GP's its just never happened.

However i am now on track and i'm going to go - for the first time ever - soon! And i'll be posting straight away!

Good luck - i'm feeling confident so i'm sure we can all do it!

fredip71 · 12/02/2007 15:22

Daisycat, I replied on the other thread

madmarchhare · 12/02/2007 15:28

Come on, off you all go.

Just think of me when you are there and think yourself lucky that your neighbours sister hasnt just srolled in jangling untensils all around as she gesticulates how to get in to town from the clinic.

Put the gadgets down lady, I dont want to see them.

me23 · 12/02/2007 21:31

bumping for evening crowd!

I've recently had one done, but results came back that they had too few cells to analyse - so shall have to go again. NOt my idea of how to spend a few minues, but, all the same, it is one of the few health checks readily available on the NHS and we should all make sure we go.

Beauregard · 12/02/2007 21:46

I am due one but keep hiding the reminders
