Should dd go to the doctors with these symptoms?

This morning she said it hurt when she went for a wee (I am thinking UTI) but I didn't notice in the short interval before she attended school that she was in discomfort or had an increased need to urinate....

When I have had a UTI in the past it has been excrutiating on urinating but also very uncomfortable all the time....

I have an appointment scheduled for her at 16.10 but if we attend that she will miss out on going around for tea at her friend's house (he isn't at her school so she sees him infrequently).

I appreciate that in the scale of things missing a tea date isn't as vital as her health - but you know how 4 year olds ham it up; she could be making a fuss about nothing.

I've sent her to school btw and told the teacher about her symptoms.

Should I keep or cancel the appointment?

I wasn't thinking that she was making it up as such - more that it could be a slight irritation (because she doesn't drink very much) which she could just flush out of her system via taking in fluids during the course of the day - iyswim. I've had irritation like this before and it just went...

But perhaps I should play it safe and take her

Any other thoughts - more votes for taking her, or just wait and see?

If it was me, I'd take her. I'd regret it if she got worse this evening and I hadn't. Could you contact school to see how she is getting on?

handlemecarefully · 12/02/2007 11:56

Good plan - I will phone

If you already have an appointment booked I would take her. You will kick yourself if you are up half the night with a child with a urine infection.

Can you re-schedule the play date for another day this week?

Thanks for asking mildmannered, it's kind of you to care - you will think I am terrible in view of the advice on here, but when she came out of school at 3.15 I had a chat to her about how she felt.

She seemed chirpy and full of energy - and I asked her what it was like to go for a wee and was it still hurting. She said that it was still a little bit painful but better.

I then explained that we must keep our doctors appointment, however this would involve cancelling our teatime play date. At this point she backtracked and indicated that as she felt a bit better she would rather not go to the doctors tonight thank you very much and would prefer to see how she felt in the morning! (as it happens - because we have rural practice, doctors appointments are not difficult to come by so we could get one tomorrow if needs be).

I have no doubt that she felt some discomfort on urinating earlier - but bless her little cotton socks; if she can exaggerate something to gain attention - boy does she go for it

So I cancelled the appointment and we went to our teatime play date. Interestingly whilst we were there she used the loo - and did not report any pain or uncomfortable sensation.

She is sound asleep in bed now...

I wonder if next time you could bung a bit of sudacrem.
Sudacrem in this house works wonders with little girls who have this type of issue.

Thanks Anisse - I shall try it.

I think overall I need to encourage her to drink more too. Much more (she's rubbish at drinking!)
