ds has had a tickly cough for a few days but noticed this morning he has two or three spots on his body. They look red with a sort of yellowy centre as if you could squeeze them?

Please dont say its Cpox

can't say without looking

but chickenpox isn't such a big deal; better to get it over with early surely?

NbgsYellowFeathers · 12/02/2007 10:54

They start like red teenage spots and gradually spread. When they develop, they turn into blisters.

fortyplus · 12/02/2007 10:54

CP spots start off as little blisters. Don't burst them or they will scar. The spots you describe don't sound like cp to me.

You'll soon know if it's cp, though - he'll have more spots within hours if that's what it is. They do usuall start around the torso - although when ds1 had it his first one was next to his eye.

mosschops30 · 12/02/2007 10:57

they do look like watery blisters, as if you could pop them, theyre very small and red round the outside. Will keep an eye on them if I remember from when I had it as a child you had one, then when you next looked you were covered.

Agreed better to have it now but just sad for ds

FioFio - yes - I had it at 30, too. I had over 300 spots and felt like death for a week followed by 6 weeks of total exhaustion. It was awful. My boys were 2.5 and 4 when they had it and breezed through it.

Anchovy · 12/02/2007 10:59

We are deep in chicken pox at the moment with DD (3). Its not too bad actually - she has been a bit cranky, demanding and high maintenance, but on the plus side she's like this most of the time anyway so we've hardly noticed.

They come quite quickly - our nanny showed me 3 or 4 small spots she had noticed in the bath and when I looked an hour later there were 10 or so.

When the spots go all scabby they look like a medieaval peasant (our current look!)

mosschops30 · 12/02/2007 11:00

Do i need to go to the docs with this (if it does develop) or do we just plaster him in calamine lotion as per olden days (80's )

mosschops30 - don't worry - she'll be fine. Pop down to the chemist and buy a big box of bicarb. A handful chucked into a warm bath is really soothing (much better than Calamine lotion). Also give her Piriton and keep up the fluid intake.

NbgsYellowFeathers · 12/02/2007 11:01

We seem to be sporting that look too Anchovy.
Its fetching isnt it

Sorry - he not she. No need for doc unless any of the spots get infected or he has them in his eye (both very unlikely).

ledodgy · 12/02/2007 11:02

Sounds like it could be the pox. You don't need to go to the doctors unless he starts getting very ill with it or very chesty. Ds has just come out of hospital after going in at the weekend with a severe chest infection which was the result of having chicken pox prior to it but this is quite rare.

NbgsYellowFeathers · 12/02/2007 11:03

Oh cripes Ledodgy!
Is he ok now? I know you were saying he was a bit off it.

fortyplus · 12/02/2007 11:04

FioFio - definite OUCH to cp & psoriasis at the same time. I can honestly say that the only time I've felt as ill was when I had pneumonia when I was 10 and had 3 months off school.
I wish I'd had cp as a child!

ledodgy · 12/02/2007 11:04

see here NBG i'm still quite worried although he does seem a bit brighter in himself

Anchovy · 12/02/2007 11:06

Piriton liquid seems to be the thing - it has the added side effect of making them very sleepy.

We've been putting oats in the bath (tied up in muslin) which may or may not be having an effect. If its not, its a buggeringly cheap bath toy.

Wags · 12/02/2007 11:13

Both my DC had a tickly cough a few days before they got chicken pox and a friend whose DD had it also said the she had a slight cough first. My 2 got it the same day as they caught it from the shingles that I had . DD was 2.1 and sailed through it, was just a bit quiet, didn't bother with calmoine but did give Piriton. DS was 14wks and was much more poorly, poor chap, especially at night but that was to be expected really. Hope your DS is OK.

Wags · 12/02/2007 11:16

Meant to say I didn't bother with Dr for DD but as we knew there was a strong chance they would get chicken pox, the Dr was flapping a bit about DS and told me to bring him in if he did get it. We took him to Dr but they were happy with him and said he could also have Piriton and told me what dose to give him (think on the bottle is says not for use under 1 year, but Dr was fine with him having it).

Eeek · 12/02/2007 11:17

you can get calamine cream now - much better. Beware Piriton - it makes my ds2 hyper. Don't test it out at bed time as we did. We were up till 4am with a cranky, restless baby

mosschops30 · 12/02/2007 11:20

thanks for all your replies, sounds like it could be then with the tickly cough and has been unsettled for a couple of nights. This morning he has just sat on sofa with his books and watched a bit of tv, bless him, thats not like him at all he's normally manic

OP posts:
Wags · 12/02/2007 11:35

Mmm, didn't know that about Piriton. DS screamed the house down for quite a few nights running - we put it down to the chicken pox, maybe it was the Piriton?! I can even remember saying 'this blardy stuff is meant to make them sleepy' to DH as we trod the boards with him. Or rather DH did, I felt so crap myself with shingles, horrible time. Having said that DD had Piriton as well and was as easy and as quiet as could be.

mosschops30 · 13/02/2007 10:03

apparently there are two different types when I went to get some at the chemist last night, the pharmacist said the old fashioned ones are better for chickenpox and makes them sleepy, and newer style anti-histamines are not great for this.

So i bought the old fashioned one
