dd2 has had a high temp since yesterday and is now complaining of a throat, she cant say sore, she wont open her mouth so that i can look at her tonsils, so im not sure wether to go to docs or not, ive spent a bit too much time there recently with one thing or another!, so dont want to go rushing down if its actually viral..have given calpol, etc.

Tonsilitus is usually bacterial - I would take her DD has had quinsey twice and been in a very bad way - they go down hill so quickly with it and it doesn't just clear up on its own.

Bugsy2 · 12/02/2007 09:54

You going to have to get her to open her mouth Spacey. If she has white spots on her tonsils then it is probably tonsillitus. If her throat is just very red & sore then it is just a sore throat at this stage, but you need to keep checking.

SpaceCadet · 12/02/2007 10:05

right, will have another go at peering into her mouth

hard to tell, her tonsils are definitely red and a bit swollen looking, cant see any white spots and as shes only 2 i dont know just how painful it is , however, she refused breakfast this morning.

i just hate rushing down to docs only to find "its a virus"

i think ill just keep an eye on her today and if she doesnt improve, then ill go to the docs

Bless her, poor little bean. Give her a double dose: calpol & nurofen.
You shouldn't do it too often, but if she is feeling really poorly it will help.
You could always phone your GP & ask them to do a telphone consultation.

LoveMyGirls · 12/02/2007 10:35

sounds like she has the same as me - im miserable with it!

I don't think its tonsillitus but my throat feels like its closing up and feels dry, tickly and itchy a bit like carpet if that makes sense.

Gives her plent to drink, hot drinks are working best, i've also had tickly cough medicine and ultra chlorasceptic.

I can't get to the docs but am having a pj day with the kids.

Tonsillitis will be white or yellow spots. Sounds to me as though she's got a sore throat from a virus. Don't agree with double dose of Calpol/Ibuprofen - better to alternate between the 2 so that you can keep up the pain relief without giving excessive paracetamol - she will appreciate pain relief every 4 hours but you shouldn't give more than 4 doses of paracetamol in 24 hours.
In fact half the recommended dose will be enough to keep the temperature down.

fortyplus · 12/02/2007 10:40

LoveMyGirls is quite right about plenty to drink, too.

SpaceCadet · 12/02/2007 10:40

bugsy-yep been doing that and plenty of fluids too..im kind of going on the assumption at the moment that its viral, but shes looking so sorry for herself..shes only 2.
lovemygirls-hope you feel better soon

My 3 girls have had this the last few days. We did the calpol+ nurofen alternating every few hours - also iced lollies and frubes went down well as soothing treats and cheered them up a bit.

SpaceCadet · 12/02/2007 10:46

forty plus, thanks, yep forgot to say, im doing calpol, neurofen but not double doses!, ill knock her out!, im alternating the nuerofen and calpol because ive found that this usually works to keep the temp down

If she'll drink it, give her some warm milk, it'll help soothe her throat. I had chronic tonsillitis most of my childhood and teens, that always worked for me.

SpaceCadet · 12/02/2007 13:30

have just looked in her throat and her tonsils are HUGE, poor little thing, her temp is still up too, i think we may end up trotting down to the docs.

Emprexia · 12/02/2007 22:47

Did you go? How is she?

Honneybunny · 14/02/2007 22:19

poor dd! is she any better? and did you go to gp?
we were just at dentist today, and he took one look in my ds1's (3.2y) mouth and asked if he had complained about his throat. apparently his tonsils are so swollen, that it looks like there's hardly any room to breath even... he's been off his food for the last week or so, and we thought he was just being difficult. poor boy has been surviving on drinks, icecream and yoghurt... i am taking him to see gp tomorrow, but read somewhere that in little children tonsillitis is mostly viral, so don't think go can do much about it.
anyway, hope your dd is getting better soon!
