I know this isnt a REALLY high temperature. But she keep son bringing all her milk back up and the nurofen i tried to give her. She is in a vest at the moment to keep her cool. Is there anymore i can do and should i take her to the docs?

Have you tried sponging her down with cool water? How about a bath with some vinegar in it (dont worry it wont make her smell). Make it quite cool - but warm enough for her to be comfortable and add a few splashes of vinegar - not sure how it works but it always works for dd.

was a thread about a fortnight ago I think with someone asking same question. Should get some good advice on there.

Sorry if i'm not much help - didnt want to leave you unanswered.

leahsmum · 12/02/2007 08:51

39 is high and you should get some calpol down her. If you have a fan, put it on in the room and turn heating down. A tepid bath is the way forward, not cold but only just warm. You also have to make sure she doesn't get too cold - tricky but just keep a close eye on her.

Is she distressed? Once her temp comes down she will feel better but calpol is essential IMO.

I'm not a doc obv but my DS has had lots of high temps and the hospital told me tepid baths are the best way to reduce a temp.

Also, I would call the GP to get her checked out for an infection which might be causing the temp.

Hope she is better soon.

colditz · 12/02/2007 09:04

Have you tried her with some calpol? gently sponging with cool water might help.

Try her with some water, and it doesn't matter if she throws it up, it's better than dry heaving anyway.

Keep and eye on her lips, if they start to look dry, call the docs.

Thanks all, i have sponged her down. Checked her temp about 10 mins ago, and it is 38.6 so it is coming down slowly. I have phoned docs and have an appointment for this afternoon. I didnt mean it wasnt high, i meant the last time she had a temp it was 40.4 and that was pretty high. She seems alright in herself a little more teary than usual. I tried Calpol on her before and it didn't seem to do anything to the temperature, do you think i should try it again? I gave her nurofen this morning but she bought that up about ten seconds after i gave it to her. Obviously dont want to overdose her on the stuff!!!

the best way to get a temperature down is a mixture of calpol and children's nurofen, it is the combo that works.
also tepid sponge (not a cold bath, that is a myth and can shock their systems)
those gel strips from boots are good - you put them on their forehead
get as much water into her as you can, soak a small cloth in cold water and let her suck on it too.

if it doesn't go down with the calpol and nurofen combo then take her to the doctors / A&E if you can't get appt or if it goes anyway near 40. 40 is the temperature at which fits can happen.

amidaiwish · 12/02/2007 09:21

if you find she throws medicine up a lot, then ask the docs for calpol suppositories. they are fantastic.

Haily111 · 12/02/2007 09:28

Thank you for the suggestion she does throw up a lot with medicines so i shall ask for them

Yes it was me asking these questions for my ds 10mths(MrsNoah) cant do links either sorry.
Got some very good answers too.

When temp gets to 40c I go straight to Hospital no arguments. Febrile convulsions are spectacularly scary.

Give her water in sips

Bath her in coolish every couple of hours if you have to.

Alternate the calpol and the nurofen but be warned, for my kids nurofen makes them projectile vomit if given on an empty stomach.

The sticky forehead strips are for older children (mine would certainly pull it off and eat it)try damp flannel instead.

My ds ended up being admitted as he had a similar bug for 8 days with temp. A virus. Still not eating either.

Anisse · 12/02/2007 19:10

Forgot to say I do hope she is better soon

Haily111 · 12/02/2007 19:14

Thank you Anisse. How long did it last?
My dd doesnt like either but have been getting some of it down!!

OP posts:
pinkbubble · 12/02/2007 20:53

Poor thing, touch wood my DD hasnt had any diarrhoea, TBH I dont think she would of had the energy to get to the loo! I hate it when they are so poorly!

Haily111 · 12/02/2007 20:59

OP posts:
kbaby · 12/02/2007 21:30

oh no dont tell me its going to get worse. I was kinda hoping it would just be a high temp and nothing else. Dont think he could put up with sickness or diariah (sp) as well.
