Well, if the tooth is removed it will cause no more bother, yes?

I had a tooth heaved out under local anaesthetic - 'twas no bother. The only root work I've had done involves hairdye, so I can't help you with that one.

i'm waiting to be refered to a clinic where they will knock me out to have the work done, cos i need 6 fillings as well and am hoping that they will do all the work in one go.

which tooth is it? is it one which is visible when you smile? has it been infected previously? root fillings are more successful the further fwd in the mouth the tooth is, and if its only been minimally infected previously.
My advice would be to try the root filling if your dentist thinks the chances of success are high, >90%. Make sure you get it crowned post succesful completion of root filling. However, if you're not bothered about having a gap then just have it removed, and consider an implant/ bridge later on.
I'm not sure i'm making sense - just fire your questions back if you want clarification, I am a dentist - so should hope i know what i'm talking about!! Although right now i'm more interested in the 28wk baby growing inside me

Well I have had both on the same tooth! Root canal was quicker to recover from, a couple of paracetamols and I felt fine, but... Root canal was expensive and didn't last more than a year! When I had the tooth extracted it was sore for a few days, but still an improvement on the pain I was in before I had it pulled!

its a back double, and i have a wisdom tooth behind it. The dentist has said it will cost about £250 for all the work that i need done. The only thing that worries me is that if i have the tooth removed am i still gonna have the pain that i have now?? also the pain is no longer in the tooth, is up the left side of my jaw. Had to have rice pudding for dinner last night as i couldnt eat the spag bol that i had cooked.

oh you poor luv, toothache is the worst kinda pain. Glad to hear you got an appointment through. If its that far back in the mouth maybe it'd be an idea to just get the tooth taken out, save you having to go back if the root canal treatment doesn't work. You'll prob get used to the gap with time, though it'll feel strange in the short term. anyway, lemme know how it goes - take care.

I had root canal treatment but it didn't last more than a couple of years. I was very upset at the thought of losing a tooth but it doesn't bother me at all now and is further forward in my mouth that yours (first lower molar I think - got 2 teeth behind it anyway).

Had no pain in the tooth/jaw after the root canal work & the treatment itself was no problem (but bloody expensive!)
