Isn't there a free trial ad flashing sometimes on talk for esporta?

And moneysavingexpert has a Cheap Gym Loophole article

pupuce · 11/02/2007 11:35

Thanks Sue... I am mostly interested in personal trainer expereince as I think I need that to get motivation going! LOL

I've had a personal trainer for the last 11 years pupuce. When I was working and earning good money I saw him 3 times a week at the David Lloyd gym (twice with DH and one by myself).
After DS I saw him twice a week for about 3 months and then just once a week (cost reasons) and at his house where he'd set up a little gym area.

DH and I now see him twice a week here at our house (we have a small gym in our loft conversion).
We currently pay £30 per hour and it's the same whether we go to him or he comes to us (his travel time versus using our equipment I guess).

If I had to make a list of essential expenditure in our house, our personal trainer would be right up there at the top!

Go for it

I have used a personal trainer in Esporta it was good to get me motivated.
Esporta do have a scheme where they do programmes etc for 3 sessions and then you can ask to see you fitness trainer when you want to, I have been lucky as is see mine as a friend and she'll phone me if I am not in the gym by a certain time!!

pupuce · 11/02/2007 12:08

Whoops is that something you have to pay for and how much is it?
Thanks Mackenzie... I am thinking of joining a small local gym, not a chain but I wanted to know what sort of money we're talking about...

I want to get the tummy reasonably flat... had 3 babies!
But I also want to firm up the old thighs... I am a tall and skinny gall (BM!18!) BUT I am not a firm skinny gall!

The scheme I am talking about is free when you join. When you join they book your first on track session and then a couple of weeks later you have another to see how you are getting on then a third session about a month later.
I think you can pay for personal trainers too but I think they vary from club to club.
The other thing I like about esporta is that when you join one you can use practically any other esporta in the country so if you go away you can still get entry it is handy for me as I have friends who are members of another club.
If you do decide to join epsorta they quite often have offers on joining fees etc so if you go and look round they will contact you (i used to get texts) and if you leave it long enough they will probably offer a free joining fee

Hi, I'm a member of esporta in swiss cottage, the personal training thing is really good. 3 one hours sessions and then you can also book refresher sessions afterwards. They have loads of mother and baby stuff too - yoga, postnatal aerobics, coffee mornings, swimming lessons, a creche. I've met loads of other mums there. It is expensive - £90/month -but worth it!

mckenzie · 11/02/2007 14:08

David lloyd also allow you to use any club in the country after your first 6 months membership.
What neck of the woods are you pupuce?

SueW · 11/02/2007 15:05

I didn't know david lloyd did that. In fact, I'm sure I asked back in about 2001 and it was one of the reasons I didnt join (almost everything else ticked the right boxes including the outdoor swimming pool to lounge around for the whole summer!)

deegward · 11/02/2007 15:07

Have a personal trainer, who comes to my house once a week would love more but can't afford it. Also work out another two to three times in a week.

PT costs £35 and is definately worth every penny.

mckenzie · 11/02/2007 17:28

SueW - I think it is relatively new as I remember using the Manchester one back in 2000 and having to pay even though i was a member of my local one.

Pann · 11/02/2007 18:11

Costs of gym vary, but if you won't be usung it at 'peak times' then most of them offer 'restricted hours' usage at a significant reduction.

Esporta charge £49 for 'all times', and if you are clever enough you can collar your 'induction' staff member whenever they are on duty and get a 'personal' input for free.

You may even have to phone up some local gyms...

Pann · 11/02/2007 18:14

oh, and Esporta do allow use of any of their gyms now.

I have a personal trainer, I only go 1 x a week (because of ds and babysitting and it's expensive otherwise), she is excellent and costs £20 for an hour. I used her when I was pregnant with DS because I was a big fatty after having DD and was desperate not to go down that route again! I am also a memeber of a gym and go 2 x a week but I only use it for swimming because I am a bit afraid of the gym types there (and the fact that everyone knows everyone else in my town so I couldn't get any exercise done without people coming and chatting - not what I want!!!). The bonus of having a trainer is that you actually do more work because they make you, instead of me going 'oh, I'm a bit tired now, I'll go for a cup of tea'

Spagblog · 11/02/2007 18:22

Member of an Esporta gym here. Love it.
Two adults and two children is about £140 per month peak membership including racquets

mckenzie · 11/02/2007 18:36

which Esporta are you a member off spagblog? Our local Esporta is adults only and I guess I assumed they all were.

whoopswithminiwhoopstinybump · 11/02/2007 18:38

I didn't know there was any esporta's that were adults only mine isn't.
I think the price of them vary from club to club as the one I was a member at in scotland was nearly £10 cheaper than the one I am at now

Pann · 11/02/2007 18:43

I am in Esporta, Denton (well, not right now..) - it claims to be 'family friendly', but offers no family ticket (though the Sheffield one does), and no family changing..so if I wished to bring dd aged 7 for a swim she would have to come into the mens changing, or be shepherded by a stranger which she would balk at.

Spagblog · 12/02/2007 16:45

Norwich, it's called the "Norfolk"
It has tonnes of things for children - even has a gym for 8+, the changing rooms are quite child friendly, although they also have "Family/disabled" changing rooms.

mckenzie · 12/02/2007 18:11

lucky you spagblog. we've been trying to get family changing rooms at our local David Lloyd for over 5 years. I'm dreading ti when DS turns 8 as then he wont be allowed in the ladies changing rooms. Yet there is no way I'm going to send him into the gents on his own. Pool side changing for him I guess??

pupuce · 13/02/2007 13:45

Thanks everyone... will go and see what fees they are talking about at our local gyms!
