DD1[13mths] has just been refered to surgery team for her umbilical hernia. Just wondered what age they will actually operate? I had one that was operated on but I was 6 or 7 as I remember going for the op. Have been told this is quite old so what is the norm?

wish i knew mate, i need to take becca to docs to get hers checked....... im slacking!

I read on one site it was the norm for 2/3yrs olds to have the op

Umbilical hernias are normal and usually resolve by them selves by about 5. If not maybe operated on at that stage for cosmitic reasons

have been looking and loads of sites say different. How big is rebeccas? Hannahs sticks out a good couple of inches and the hole is about 3cms wide. Am worried its that which is adding to her constipation problems which is what we were actually at gps for..lol

becca's isnt that big - an inch or so protruding and about the size of a 50p

it is more noticeable at night.

hannahs protrudes all the time can see it through her clothes etc. Still soft when you push it but just doesnt go in at all.

If necessary they can operate from 12 months old so it could be that the surgeon sees her and puts her on the list straight away. How long the list is is another matter!! They'll assess it and see whether it needs surgery or if it can wait to see if it resolves itself. HTH

My ds had his operated on at 13 months. Looking back I am not sure of the reasons, but waiting was never talked about. He had his st the John Radcliffe BTW. It was far more traumatic for me than him. He was jumping around his cot 10 minutes after coming back to the ward!

Thanks for that, DD1 has her appointment on the 6th march so will see what they say. I am glad your DS was quite happy afterwards as remembering mine I hated it but then I was so much older so was probably half anxiety aswell.
