Find medicine for cystitis

I'm a 36 years old woman. I have diagnosed with cystitis for 2 years. It seems that it has developed into a chronic disease. I've tried antibiotics before, but they could only relieve the symptoms and I'm afraid the long-term use will develop drug resistance. Do you know what other medicines can be used to cure cystitis?

My Mum suffered regularly with this and used to take potassium citrate. It's a liquid medicine which she used to buy fairly cheaply from the pharmacy. Also I remember her taking something called cystopurin but don't know if it was prescription or not, nor if it was tablet or liquid. How very unpleasant for you I hope you find a solution.

You could give D-Mannose a try - it really works, and can be taken as a prophylactic. Expensive, but worth it if you've been suffering for a long time. Useful to keep on standby for frequent attacks.

Thank you for your reply. Hope everything goes well with your Mum. A friend of mine recommended me taking a herbal medicine called Diuretic and Anti-inflammatory Pill. It's curative effect is great. I'm going to have a try.

I'm sure you've probably tried this but have you given cranberry juice a go? My mum has the chronic diagnosis and for years she'd try it for a few days and give up because she hates the taste. Last few months she's been drinking it regularly - strange change of tastebuds and cravings - and alongside her meds she has seen an improvement. I hope things ease up for you soon, it's a horrible one Flowers

Has your GP sent away a sample to be tested? If not they should because you won't always have been given the right ABs unless they know which bacteria it is.

Are you getting it often or it's just not going away?

I'd be wary of cranberry because you could have an inflamed bladder lining- called interstitial cystitis - this is not an infection. Cranberry and other acidic drinks, even tea and coffee can make it much worse.

There is a lot of info and help on the website COB Foundation.

As the pp poster says if you have a chance of having IC then don't drink cranberry juice the acid will make it worse. Get a referral to a urologist and get a diagnosis and go from there.

There is a news feature today in the Times about research done in the US recently on cranberry and the conclusion was it doesn't help prevent infections.
