Ear-ache?

How can you tell whether a 3-4mo (who hasn't yet discovered that he has hands) has earache?

Ds2 has a chesty cold and a bit of catarrh. He doesn't feel as if he has a fever. The catarrh doesn't seem to bother him or affect his feeding, yet sometimes he really struggles to feed. At times he screams if laid or held anywhere near horizontal and is only happy when held upright. Twice last night he woke screaming. The same signs could be wind, of course, but he doesn't generally bring up a bubble or fart when this happens, nor can I feel or hear wind inside him. Two days ago one ear had a lot of crusty orangey-brown stuff in it.

Could he have ear-ache? And how can I help him?

I know, its very hard to tell at that age. Best get her checked out because of her ear having a lot of stuff in it. My daughter was older when she was getting ear infections and I even overlooked it on one occassion and felt bad when the doctor said. She used to go through alot of pain when she had it, screaming. We even used to take her out in the car to try to settle her not knowing what was wrong. Also is meant to be accompanied with stomache ache a doctor told me not that you can tell with that either. Yeah, I would definately pop to dr and explain the discharge and let him have a peak, put your mind at rest.

I would take him to the drs. That is the only way you are going to find out
