Does your 6 or 7 year old use deodorant?

My son is suddenly starting to smell a bit like a teenager - sweaty and male, eek! Do your children this age use deodrant and if so, what type? Is there a natural non paraben one?

Oh sympathy. Sweaty boy smells. Can't help though, my daughter barely gets washed most days. Erm, does he eat loads of onions/garlic? Reduce that a bit? Struggling here, can you tell?

carla · 13/06/2004 12:12

God, how scarey. What's a paraben? I do remember being at primary school and smelling, well, for want of a better word for it, sweaty. But I think I was 10/11.

Hi WWW! My nearly 7 yr old does tend to sweat a lot, especially when doing sport. But he doesn't get smelly yet ... at least not in a day. He does need clean clothes and a 'proper wash' every day though, and sports kit goes straight in the wash every time.

Do let me know how you get on, and what products you find suitable if you go that route. I'm sure we'll be following you that was very soon.

Don't want to hijack this thread, but dd1 had a full-on pimple on her nose on Friday. Scarey. She picked it off - but surely this shouldn't happen at 5???

www, you could try Bionsen, an Italian aluminium-free deodorant that's available from Boots. It doesn't list a paraben-type substance in its ingredients, as far as I can tell...in fact, you obviously know about these things, is propylene glycol a paraben, it's the only likely suspect on the list?
Hope you get a more helpful answer than this. One of my colleagues, a full-grown and fragrant person, swears by her Pitrok and your little guy might quite enjoy scrubbing his armpits with a crystal!

WideWebWitch · 14/06/2004 08:30

Thanks everyone. Marina, I'm no expert on parabens but I think they're just called xyz paraben on the side of containers. I'll let you know how I get on - I may well try a crystal. I know carla, I definitely didn't use deodorant until I was 12 or something.

Well Bionsen must be paraben-free then. Excellent! Thanks for that and good luck, www.

I think Lush do some all natural deodarant crystally things. They might be too girlie for your boy though....

Green People do an organic, plant-based, roll-on deodorant which I have been using for a week or so and which has been effective in this heat. It's available from Waitrose and from www.greenpeople.co.uk The packaging is quite plain and un-girly.

hope you find something suitable, www. some of my sons friends started smelling sweaty around 7 years old - it seems to vary a lot from child to child. So far my 10 year old is still smell-less. But then dh hardly ever smells either - even his feet!
