Longer periods with mirena!

I had my coil fitted 3 years ago. My cycle is still 24 days at best and my mucky period which is enough to make me feel like I'm having a period, lasts 10 days! I get severe pinching pains through out andfeel wound up for 2 days. I am heavier and cannot lose weight beyond a stone which comes and goes. I do not have a thyroid which doesn't help, but I think I have gained a stone and a half since having this thing put in. I hate the plastic strings which hang down, they put me off sex! Anyone esle feel like this?

is it copper coil or mirena?

BuffysMum · 07/02/2007 20:15

sorry not reading title properly! Hmm I'm still having periods after 16 months and it's lasting at least a week or so. The dr I spoke to about still having periods said it was because I was still young!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only option you really have is getting it taken out and see if it all improves. My periods were so heavy before that the current situation is preferable to the 3/4 days on the loo that I used to have.

I am having my mirena removed next week after a year. I have no periods which is great. But I have terrrible acne and despite starting a fitness regime at the beginning of last year I have not lost an ounce. Doctor syas not enough hormone to cause this but the other massive threads on this make me wonder otherwise.

Its mirena. It took about 6 months to settle from constant pinching to periodic pinching - also have a very small mid cycle bleed. Skin red and lumpy, but may be thyroid medication. Single mum, no sex life and no desire for one!

Get the damn thing out.

6 months is long enough to be miserable.

PhilG I have been having problems for a while now with feeling very unwell for a day at a time for no apparent reason. i have had my coil for four years and have always considered it to be fab, until i eliminated almost everything else as the cause for my mood swings, weight gain, tiredness. I am going to see GP tomorrow to discuss having it removed, the more i read about the damn things the more I

I was determined to have it out last year, then I remembered the Godfather type beds which I experienced before it was put in! The periods go on and on, but I don't lose like I used to except now its this vile brown and bloody muck which keeps on and on coming for days - sorry for the graphics, but only people on this site will understand. I am sure it has accounted for my weight gain, but I had my thyroid removed 6 years ago so the two conspire against me. Having it put in was bad enough- must admit the thought of the pain puts me off! hat a wimp!

you really should ask for a referral to a GYN to figure out why your periods are so out of whack or heavy.

could be polyps, fibroids, etc.

conditions which can be treated in other ways besides shoving a coil in their uterus.

also have you thyroxine levels assessed.

i have the mirena and my periods do last longer and are annoying but i dont know what other contraceptive i could use so im stuck with it i think. They are light though but they just go on and on.

Hi PhilG.
Had Mirena in for 18mths.
You are the first person I have heard mention the 'pinching'. I've been getting it to and wondered what it was. It can take me by surprise and can`be really sore.
My periods are also just as you described yours - Long and yukky.
I was considering having Mirena removed a few months ago but didn't for fear of getting pregnant again sooner than I'd like to .

Thanks for the responses. It is really helpful to hear other people's experiences. It is so difficult to get a Dr to listen so it is encouraging to know that others feel the same.
