Having Tonsils Out As An Adult - Anyone?!?!?

funkimummy · 07/02/2007 15:10

Uuuuugh. OK, I am the world's biggest wimp. I hate hospitals (even though I've worked in one for 3 years!)

After many years of tonsilitis bouts, my GP wants to refer me to have them taken out. I should have had it done as a child, but my GP then decided to let me suffer!!

Anyone else had them taken out as an adult? I've got to have my wisdom teeth (3 of) taken out this year too!!

I have had 2 C-sections, so not adverse to a bit of pain. I'm just a bit of a pansy!

Sorry to say this, but I know someone who had has her tonsils out as an adult and she said the recovery was really painful. She's had other surgery to compare it with.

bollocks..

Catch you on the news thread in a tick.....

(How funny to be having two completely different conversations at the same time.)

I wonder what you can do to prepare yourself to ease the recovery. Homeopathy would probably be a good starting point.

funkimummy · 07/02/2007 15:24

What sort of homeopathy do you recommend?

I had my tonsils out at 22 and it was OK - I got an infection afterwards so was poorly for a couple of weeks, but not in bed or anything, just felt rough. Immediately after the op was fine - definitely not as painful as having a c-section (speaking from experience)

funkimummy · 07/02/2007 15:36

Cheers DD. Sounds OK. I think I'm having them 'lasered' out!

really sorry also had tonsils out aged 20 and it was horrific, i'd have the emergency c- section again any time. get in lots listerine and toothpaste , the taste in my mouth was foul for 3 weeks and i was cleaning my teeth as if i had ocd!

PrettyCandles · 07/02/2007 16:30

No idea, it's just that homeopathy is often really good were conventional medicine is just grin-and-bear-it.

Mistymoo · 07/02/2007 16:36

I had mine out at 17 and like Dottydot I too got an infection after it so was ill with that. Apparently my breath was stinking, so much so my mum was opening the window to get some fresh air in .

The op was fine though. The only thing that scared me was that no-one had told me you would be sick after it and it would be blood - obviously the blood goes down your throat - and so I got quite a fright when I was sick.

Tiggiwinkle · 07/02/2007 16:45

I had mine out as an adult too.I'm afraid it is painful afterwards-I would recommend gargling with soluble aspirin as that acts as a local anaesthetic. But you aren't always sick afterwards-I wasn't!

jhyesmum · 07/02/2007 16:50

I should have had mine taken out a couple of years ago (i'm 29), but I bottled it!

funkimummy · 07/02/2007 17:39

AAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. I'm a bit wussy pudding. I'm 28 and still got manky tonsils!!! Wish me luck!

It's not too bad - if you suffer from tonsillitis badly its like a bad bout but it can only get better. I had mine out at 18 and I am now 42. I know that was a long time ago, but my health picked up quickly and I never have those awful tummy upset, tonsillitis bashes now. I was always ill. Will make a big impact on your health. Bite the bullet and do it. once it's all healed, it's done and dusted for ever1 Good luck!

Funkimummy, I had my tonsils out in November at the grand old age of 41. Now, how do i put this nicely...it was awful!!!!

However, since i've had the op, i haven't had the reoccuring tonsilitis nearly every fortnight, so in my view, is definitely worth the 3 weeks i felt like poo.

I was in overnight (as you lose alot of blood) and could only swallow without pain on the Thursday of the 3rd week. This may have been due to the post op infection i got - as some find they feel well enough to return to work after a fortnight off.

I couldn't gargle though as the scar tissue (that is what i was told it was) got in the way. The uvula (dangly bit in middle of throat) gets clamped and mine swelled up to double the size (or more) and hung right on the very back of my tongue, making me feel like i was choking constantly.

I was told to take iron tablets prior to the op as i was anaemic and you can lose two points (not pints!!!) in iron levels after surgery of any kind.

My friendly health guy recommended Arnica homeopathic tablets prior to and after surgery to minimise the swelling, but i found that prior to, gave me a sore throat and i had already been cancelled twice due to ill health, so didn't do that.

I didn't believe i would ever say this at the time but i do feel better, i'm not so tired from constantly feeling so ill, my energy increased and i lost 6lbs in a week as i could barely eat, so that was good for me!

They do make you eat a meal (i was given weetabix) before you leave hospital but i lived on weetabix with warm milk afterwards, however it used to take 20-30 minutes to eat them, a half teaspoon at at time.

Good luck Funkimummy - it isn't pleasant but i promise you will feel 100% better when you're fully recovered. xx

PS - I took some post in to write notes to my visitors and when i came home - it was alot easier (especially as my Dad wears a hearing aid!!!) than trying to talk.

Chocol8 · 07/02/2007 23:25

Sorry, that should have read Post It pads!

Tinker · 07/02/2007 23:32

Had mine out at 23 and also puked blood and then got an ear infection. Horrid at the time but I'd do it again for 2 weeks in bed now.

spiker · 07/02/2007 23:49

It hurt alright, and I wish somebody had warned me about puking blood. But it was worth it. And they are generous with pain relief

Good luck.

funkimummy · 08/02/2007 08:58

Thanks everyone!!! I'm going private, thanks to DH's health insurance. So at least the surroundings might be nice!

I'll let you all know how it goes!

hi,

good luck. Had mine out at 19 - not the greatest as you have to wait until you don't have tonsilitis & feel ok and then decide to go into hospital and get a sore throat!

Yes, sore & yes bit of blood from the cauterising but not as bad as tosilitis - just GA effects & real sore throat - when I had mine done gone were the days of jelly & ice cream - they asked for me to eat really crunchy food so as to scrape off debris so no infections - my first meal was chicken nuggets & fries!

Unfortunaltey for me, all that happens is that i now get larnygitis but sure that won't be case for u.

sort out some good books to read to take your mind off the discomfort! just read am homes - 'this book will change your life' and audery niffennegger 'the time travellers wife' if you want a recommendation

Chocol8 · 08/02/2007 09:48

Ooh, Torti, short hijack, i've read Time Traveller's wife and have just bought This book will change your life - is it really good...and did it change your life? lol

I may as well have gone private Funkimummy, i was in a room on my own, presumably because of infection, and hardly saw anyone except the odd nurse. They gave me looooaaaads of morphine which meant i slept alot but found that the painkillers after this didn't touch the pain at all so stopped taking them.

You'll be fine - just rest up and take it easy afterwards.
