Herpes Virus - Anyone know anything?

DS (11 months) had all sores in his mouth a fortnight ago - told it was herpes virus, given medicine, all healed.

Coldsore proper has now come out on his mouth, pharmacist told me to go back to GP (which I will be later today).

BUT... went to change his nappy just now and his foreskin is looking sore and just plain odd (sort of lifeless looking at the end - like when you've had a deflated blister).

Are we thinking this is the herpes virus transferred from his mouth to his boy bits?!?! If it is, he's screwed isn't he? He'll have it there on and off for life?

I don't want girls thinking my boy is some diseased guy, or him passing it on to whoever he does end up with long term (yes, I know he's not 1 yet but I am worrying).

Hormones are playing a big part in my posts today

I'm feeling guilty that its all because of me, guilty that he might be like it forever (in bouts), and just all over negative.

Tomorrow I'll (hopefully) be all positive that its just a one off and all will be fine!

You have all been so nice to me and helpful - sorry to anyone who has awkward explaining with their googling history

By the time I had gotten to the doctors he had even more sores... not that they actually seem to be bothering him - he is still yanking on himself happily

He was run down at the start with this horrible flu thing going round, and I think thats how its been able to take hold so much.

Hopefully the meds will blast it soon

Flamesparrow, you might want to call the Hrpes Viral assoc and see if they can give you some more information or advise. There office number is 020 7607 9661 and they have a helpline open tomorrow evening on 0845 1232305. They might be able to suggest another way of getting a correct diagnosis.
I am a longtime 'sufferer' of both strains and I have always found them to be very helpful and knowledgeable.
Thinking of you

how's the little fella this morning Flamesparrow? and how are you doing?

Flamesparrow · 08/02/2007 11:18

He's doing well - his one on his mouth has gone down, and his bits don't seem to bother him (odd child!).

I'm a lot calmer - will ring the numbers when it gets quieter round here!!

Thank you for asking

I hope they can be of some help to you.

Thankyou soooo much

They were lovely - told me more in 2 mins than my googling and doctor managed put together.

Obv with no results yet they said it had to be based on most common thing... Which is - he had type 1 (oral - coldsores etc) which lives on the face (well, PREFERS to live on the face, like me preferring to live by the sea). It can be transferred to other places - eg his boy bits, but its sort of like a secondary infection (moving me to inner city). It is still the type 1 (which WILL stay in his body), but if it decides to crop up again, it will in all probability be the face, and only go back down there if he transfers it by fiddling!!!

So - on genitals, but NOT "genital herpes" iyswim

My little boy got the herpes simplex from his grandad kissing him when he was 1.5yrs. He had a mouth full of blisters and then a coldsore on his nose. I was really gutted when I was told that he will carry it forever, and all I could think about was when he is a teenager and kissing girls!!
However, he is 4.5 now and he hasnt really ever had another outbreak. The dr said that he will only really get it if he is tried/rundown/ill/stressed.
So dont worry too much about it

paws4thought · 13/02/2007 16:49

dare i say it but my ex gave me genital herpes - very nice of him not!!! type 1 herpes are the coldsores and type 2 are the genital ones. Since oral sex has become more popular (not so much in my mums day!) type 2 is now more common on the face and type 1 is now also found on the genitals. a test can confirm what type it is so that you can find out what you are dealing with.if it is herpes then the chances of it recurring are high. I would def get him checked out. Its not nice and its very painful. Fingers crossed its not that though!if you need any more advice please give me a shout - i've lived with it for about 5 years and get outbreaks every couple of months so i have loads of knowledge about it.
