My DSs have had a number of ops between them. In fact I have lost count how many times I have watched them go under the anaesthetic in the 4 and a half years since I first became a mother.

I know many of you on here are in the same situation. But why doesnt it get any easier? In fact, I think it gets harder.

How do you cope? I'm not sure I can any more, although I know I have to

aw poor you is this too be the last op? my ds has had a lot of hospital visits and a few anaesthetics at the end of last year and i think when the nhs get their arse in gear then he will be readmitted for more tests

THAnks for your posts you two. I dont know whaT i was expecting people to say. but thkas for reading and for the support. I guess I just need to do this on my own. I would hate anyone else to feel what I am feeling, but empathy might help. It it is so hard I wish I didnt have to do it

heres sending you and your Ds my best wishes and hope he will have a rapid recovery.what day does he have his op ?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/02/2007 08:36

Aaaw losty. My dd has has several ops and general anaesthetics and I agree, it does get harder. When they are babies, whilst it's so hard to let them go, they don't have any fear of it. But as they get older you are coping with their emotions as well as your own.

Are you waiting for another op?

Hope all goes well on Tues. I know how you feel, my DS (2yrs old) has had lots of GAs in the last year and I found the last one really hard - spent ages the night before watching videos of him and thinking about him. But I have got to know the anaethetists in the team and trust them to look after him. One in particular kept him safe through two 10-hour + ops and a 3-hour op when he was very very poorly so I always hope it will be her on duty for the next one too!

Keep strong and give your DS lots cuddles. Will the op take a long time? If so then try and have someone with you for extra support and distraction.

Strength & courage to you, SqM x

My dd4 (10 months) had four ops last year, three of them in the space of about 8 weeks. Waiting for the 4th was the hardest because I had more time to think about it IYKWIM yet it was fairly minor in comparison to the others. We face the potential of her having more ops in the future and I'm dreading it,probably because I know more about it now (she's the first of my children to go into hospital).
I'm not sure if what I've written is helpful, but at least you know your not alone .

Just to add, good vibes for next Tuesday. (I always find copious amounts of red wine the night before helps me ).

losty · 07/02/2007 19:56

thanks you two. really kind considerate posts. funny you say taht about red wine. I usually do drink lots but am trying to cut down in advance of next week... maybe I should wait till after then....

God it is hard isnt it? I wish none of our dc had to go through this
